Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Hungarian, when you use a negative word like 'senki' (nobody) or 'semmi' (nothing), you MUST also use the negative particle 'nem' before the verb.
- Use 'nem' before the verb if you have a negative pronoun: 'Senki nem jött el' (Nobody came).
- Use 'sem' for 'neither/nor' or 'either': 'Nem szeretem a kávét, sem a teát' (I don't like coffee, nor tea).
- Negative pronouns always require 'nem' in the sentence: 'Semmit nem látok' (I see nothing).

Hungarian uses negative concord, meaning that if a sentence contains a negative pronoun (like 'senki' - nobody, 'semmi' - nothing), the verb must also be negated with 'nem'.
