Frequency Expressions
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Frequency adverbs in Swedish usually come after the main verb in simple sentences.
- Place frequency adverbs like 'alltid' after the verb: Jag äter alltid frukost.
- In questions, the adverb follows the subject: Äter du alltid frukost?
- Use 'aldrig' for negative frequency: Jag dricker aldrig kaffe.
Overview
alltid (always), ofta (often), ibland (sometimes), sällan (seldom), and aldrig (never). Unlike English, where placement can be quite flexible, Swedish has a very specific 'V2' rule (Verb second) and a strict placement for these adverbs. Mastering this early will make your Swedish sound much more natural and less like a direct translation from English.- Texting: 'Vi ses ofta!' (We see each other often!)
- Job Interviews: 'Jag arbetar alltid hårt.' (I always work hard.)
- Travel: 'Bussen går sällan på söndagar.' (The bus rarely runs on Sundays.)
- Ordering food: 'Jag vill aldrig ha lök.' (I never want onions.)
Meanings
Frequency expressions define how often an action occurs, providing essential temporal context to sentences.

Describing the regularity of an action.
“Hon läser alltid böcker.”
“Vi ses sällan nu.”
