Conjugating the Past Tense

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The Turkish past tense uses the suffix -di (or its variants) to describe completed actions that happened in the past.

  • Add -di, -dı, -du, or -dü based on vowel harmony to the verb stem.
  • For negative forms, insert -me or -ma before the past tense suffix.
  • For questions, add the separate question particle 'mi' after the verb.
Verb Stem + Suffix (-di/-dı/-du/-dü) + Personal Ending
