00:09

Thank you.

00:11

We are all born

00:13

with a brain that has 86 billion neurons.

00:19

And throughout our life, we make relatively few new neurons.

00:25

In fact, we lose about 2 billion neurons throughout the course of our lifetime.

00:33

So you may wonder -

00:34

if we're losing billions of neurons

00:36

and we're not making a lot of new neurons,

00:40

what's changing in the brain

00:42

to support all those mental habits and behaviors

00:46

that make up our self-identity?

00:49

Well, the answer is "activity-dependent plasticity."

00:53

This is the function by which the brain is continually modified

00:59

through the 150 trillion cell-to-cell synaptic connections

01:04

that are made in response to your everyday experiences.

01:10

One main point that I hope you take home today

01:13

is that not only are they contributing to your self-identity,

01:17

but they are continually changing your brain

01:21

and they are strongly influencing your health and longevity.

01:26

I hope to also demonstrate

01:28

that a systematic form of mental training involving meditation

01:34

can potentially transform your self and your mental habits in a positive way.

01:42

In 2002, I was a graduate student in cognitive neurosciences -

01:46

that was me.

01:48

I was studying the brains of rats

01:51

to better understand the neural circuitry of learning and memory.

01:55

And activity-dependent plasticity

01:57

was a really important concept for studying memory,

02:01

but I was interested in how that concept could be applied

02:06

towards a neuroscientific understanding of the self

02:12

through the lens of meditation and mindful awareness.

02:16

Now, mindful awareness

02:17

can be simply thought of as a way of paying attention

02:21

in a way that is continually watchful and discerning

02:26

for what is arising and passing in our minds and in the external world.

02:32

Now, when I was in graduate school,

02:34

there was barely any science of mindfulness.

02:37

In fact, before the year 2000,

02:39

there was the grand total

02:41

of 39 peer-reviewed scientific articles on the topic.

02:46

So for good reason, maybe, my mentor sat me down one day and said,

02:50

"Dave, you will not be successful in academia by focusing on meditation.

02:55

Forget about all that Zen stuff."

02:59

And I walked out of his office feeling rather disappointed, discouraged.

03:04

But it did not deter me from this calling.

03:08

Fast-forward 10 years -

03:09

I was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School,

03:12

studying meditation in a neuroimaging laboratory.

03:16

And about that time,

03:18

I was invited to present my research directly to the Dalai Lama,

03:23

along with five other emerging leaders in the field from around the world.

03:27

(Applause)

03:29

Thank you. That is very kind.

03:33

Yes, this was really an amazing opportunity.

03:37

And the advice he gave the six of us

03:39

is something I will never forget for my lifetime.

03:43

He said, pointing his finger at each one of us,

03:47

"You each have the great responsibility

03:50

for helping to build a happy, peaceful world.

03:53

Millions of people want a happy, peaceful world

03:57

but are lacking the knowledge of how to do so.

04:00

Through carrying your experiment month by month, year by year,

04:06

you will gain evidence to convince others.

04:10

I will watch you,

04:12

whether you are really -

04:15

whether you are really helping to build a happy, peaceful world or not."
