Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Some Greek verbs don't follow the standard -σα pattern in the past; you must memorize their unique 'strong' stems.

  • Identify the root: Many common verbs change their stem entirely (e.g., βλέπω -> είδα).
  • Check for vowel shifts: Some verbs lengthen their vowels instead of adding -σα.
  • Memorize the 'Big Five': Focus on common verbs like λέω, τρώω, πίνω, βλέπω, and βρίσκω first.
Augment (ε-) + Irregular Stem + Ending (-α, -ες, -ε...)

Meanings

The Aorist (past perfective) is used for completed actions. Irregular stems occur when the verb root changes form rather than just adding the standard suffix.
