Irregular Aorist Stems
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Some Greek verbs don't follow the standard -σα pattern in the past; you must memorize their unique 'strong' stems.
- Identify the root: Many common verbs change their stem entirely (e.g., βλέπω -> είδα).
- Check for vowel shifts: Some verbs lengthen their vowels instead of adding -σα.
- Memorize the 'Big Five': Focus on common verbs like λέω, τρώω, πίνω, βλέπω, and βρίσκω first.
Meanings
The Aorist (past perfective) is used for completed actions. Irregular stems occur when the verb root changes form rather than just adding the standard suffix.
Completed Action
A single, finished event in the past.
“Έφαγα ένα μήλο.”
