Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The Aorist is your go-to tense for completed actions in the past; just add the specific past-tense endings to the verb stem.

  • Use it for actions that happened once and finished: 'I ate' (Kera).
  • It does not describe ongoing habits; use the Imperfect for that.
  • The endings change based on whether the verb ends in -el or -al.
Verb Stem + Past Ending = Completed Action ✅

Check the ending

Always look at the infinitive ending (-el or -al) before choosing your Aorist suffix.
⚠️

Don't confuse with Imperfect

If you are describing a habit, stop! Use the Imperfect instead.
🎯

Listen for the stress

The stress on the final syllable is a great way to identify Aorist verbs in speech.
💬

Use it for storytelling

Armenians love to tell stories; the Aorist is your main tool for keeping the listener engaged.

Smart Tips

Use the Aorist for the main events and the Imperfect for the background details.

Ես գնացի տուն, անձրևը գնաց (I went home, it rained) Ես գնացի տուն, երբ անձրևը գալիս էր (I went home when it was raining)

Check the infinitive in a dictionary; the ending is always there.

Guessing the ending. Looking up 'kardal' -> 'kardatsi'.

Avoid slang and use full sentences with pronouns.

Գնացի տուն (Went home) Ես գնացի տուն (I went home)

Repeat the verb in the same tense.

Q: Գնացի՞ր (Did you go?) A: Գնում եմ (I am going) Q: Գնացի՞ր (Did you go?) A: Այո, գնացի (Yes, I went)
