個人的に

When you want to express your personal opinion or say that something applies to you individually, use 個人的に (kojinteki ni).

It's an adverb, so it often comes before a verb or an adjective.

Think of it as saying "speaking for myself" or "from my perspective."

For example, if someone asks about a movie, you could say "個人的に、あの映画はあまり好きじゃありませんでした" (Personally, I didn't really like that movie).

It adds a nuance of 'speaking for myself' or 'from my individual point of view.' Example 1: 個人的に、この映画は面白かったです。 Personally, this movie was interesting. (My individual opinion) Example 2: それは個人的に重要な問題です。 That is a personally important issue. (Important to me as an individual) Example 3: 彼は個人的に会いたいと言っています。 He says he wants to meet personally (in person, individually).

자주 하는 실수

A common mistake is to overuse 「個人的に」 when simply stating an opinion that is already understood to be personal. If you are clearly expressing your own thoughts, you don't always need to add 「個人的に」. For example, saying 「この映画は面白かったです」 already implies it's your opinion. Also, while it can mean 'personally' in the sense of 'in person' or 'individually,' be careful not to confuse it with other ways to express 'in person' like 「直接」 (chokusetsu - directly) or 「対面で」 (taimen de - face-to-face), which might be more appropriate depending on the context. Incorrect usage example: 私は個人的に、今日のランチを食べました。 I personally ate today's lunch. (Redundant and unnatural. Just '私は今日のランチを食べました' is fine.) Better alternatives for 'in person' or 'directly' depending on context: 直接会って話したいです。 I want to meet and talk directly (in person). 彼に直接渡しました。 I handed it to him personally (directly).
