Washing dishes is often a communal activity during weddings or funerals where neighbors come together to help the grieving or celebrating family. Laypeople often volunteer to wash the monks' alms bowls and plates as a form of 'Waiyawitsa' (service merit). In cities like Yangon, the 'Pankan-say-set' (dishwasher) is becoming a status symbol among the middle class, though manual washing remains the norm. In villages, dishes are often washed outdoors near a well or a water pot (yay-o), using ash or coconut husks as scrubbers in the past.
