Identifying Perfective Verbs

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Perfective verbs describe actions that have a clear beginning and end, focusing on the result rather than the process.

  • Use perfective verbs for one-time, completed actions: 'Pročitao sam knjigu' (I read/finished the book).
  • Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe ongoing actions.
  • They are often formed by adding a prefix to an imperfective verb: 'pisati' (to write) -> 'napisati' (to finish writing).
Subject + Prefix-Verb (Perfective) = Completed Result

Meanings

Perfective verbs denote actions viewed as a single, bounded whole, emphasizing the completion or the attainment of a result.

1

Completion

The action reached its natural conclusion.

“Popio sam kafu.”

“Napisao sam mejl.”

2

Inception

The action just started.

“Zapevao je.”

“Zaplako je.”
