شبه حد أعرفه

Use it when you are about 70% sure you've seen someone before. You can say it directly to the person as a question. Or, you can whisper it to a friend while pointing someone out. In Egyptian or Levantine dialects, حد means 'someone.' If you want to be more specific, you can add أوي (very much) at the end. It sounds like Shabah had a'rifuh in conversation.

• When a new colleague joins the office and has a familiar vibe.
• While people-watching at a mall with your best friend.
• To start a conversation with someone you actually want to meet.

Avoid using this in high-stakes professional settings like a job interview. It might make you seem distracted or overly casual. Don't use it if you are in a dark alley at night. That is just creepy, not friendly! Also, avoid saying it to someone who is clearly busy or annoyed. They won't appreciate the trip down memory lane.

Arabic culture thrives on social connections and 'wasta' (networking). Finding a common link is almost a national sport in many Middle Eastern countries. When you say someone looks familiar, you are often inviting a game of 'Who do we both know?' This often leads to discovering you both went to the same school. Or perhaps you have a mutual aunt in another city. It’s a way of building community in a room full of strangers.
