Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use Imperfective verbs for 'how long' an action lasted, and Perfective verbs with 'за' for 'how long it took' to finish.
- Imperfective + Time (no preposition) = Duration of an ongoing process. Example: 'Учих два часа.'
- Perfective + 'за' + Time = Time taken to complete a result. Example: 'Научих го за два часа.'
- Never use 'за' with Imperfective verbs to express duration. Example: 'Пишех за един час' is incorrect.
Meanings
In Bulgarian, the choice between Imperfective and Perfective aspect is strictly tied to how we measure time. We use the Imperfective to describe the process of an action over a period, and the Perfective to describe the time required to achieve a specific result.
Process Duration
Focusing on the activity itself without implying it was finished.
“Гледахме филма цяла вечер.”
“Работих в градината три часа.”
Completion Time
Focusing on the deadline or the total time taken to reach a goal.
“Изгледахме филма за два часа.”
“Поправих колата за един следобед.”
Aspect and Duration Patterns

| Perfective | Написах (I finished writing) | за | един час | Time to complete |
| Imperfective | Готвих (I cooked) | None | цяла вечер | Spent the evening cooking |
| Perfective | Сготвих (I finished cooking) | за | един час | Dinner was ready in 1hr |

Smart Tips
Check if your verb has a prefix (like 'на-', 'про-', 'из-'). If it doesn't, it's likely Imperfective and shouldn't have 'за'.
Always use the Perfective. If you use Imperfective, the listener will wait for you to finish the story.
Stick to Imperfective and no 'за', even if the action is completed every day.

Preposition Stress
The preposition 'за' is usually unstressed and leans on the following noun.
Emphasis on Speed
Направих го за ПЕТ минути! ↗
Rising intonation on the number emphasizes how fast the result was achieved.
Memorize It
Mnemonic
Imperfective is a 'Flow' (no 'за'), Perfective is a 'Goal' (needs 'за').
Visual Association
Imagine a marathon runner. The Imperfective is the video of them running (duration). The Perfective is the photo of them crossing the finish line with a stopwatch (completion time).
Rhyme
If the work is still in view, Imperfective is for you. If the work is finally done, Perfective + 'за' has won!
Story
Ivan was 'reading' (четеше) for hours, enjoying the process. But when his boss asked when he'd be done, he 'finished' (прочете) the report 'in' (за) ten minutes to impress him.

Generally, no. In standard Bulgarian, 'за' + time indicates completion, which contradicts the 'ongoing' nature of Imperfective verbs.
You would usually use the Perfective: `Направих го за два часа`. The duration of the effort is implied in the completion time.
Yes, in the context of 'I'll be done in an hour' (`Ще бъда готов за един час`).
Yes, the aspect-duration harmony applies to Past, Present (for habits), and Future tenses.
This is a fixed expression meaning 'for a little while'. It is an exception used with both aspects.
Use `За колко време...?` with a Perfective verb.
