Negating Present Perfect

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To negate the Present Perfect, place the particle 'не' immediately before the auxiliary verb 'съм'.

  • Rule 1: Use 'не' + auxiliary 'съм' + L-participle. Example: 'Не съм чел' (I haven't read).
  • Rule 2: The auxiliary verb 'съм' is NEVER dropped in the negative form, even in the 3rd person.
  • Rule 3: The L-participle must still agree in gender and number with the subject.
Subject + не + съм/си/е/сме/сте/са + Verb(-л/-ла/-ло/-ли)

The 'Yet' Trick

Always pair 'не съм' with 'още' (yet) to sound more natural when talking about daily tasks.
⚠️

Don't Drop the 'E'

In the 3rd person singular (he/she/it), never forget the 'е'. 'Той не е ял' is correct; 'Той не ял' is a different mood.
💡

Gender Check

If you are a woman, your L-participle must always end in -ла. Practice saying 'Не съм била' until it's automatic.
💬

Polite Refusal

Use the negative perfect to decline offers politely. It sounds less aggressive than the present tense.

Smart Tips

Always put 'още' at the very beginning or right before 'не'.

Не съм ял още. Още не съм ял.

The pronoun goes between the auxiliary and the participle: 'не съм + го + видял'.

Не съм видял го. Не съм го видял.

Ask yourself: 'Does this matter right now?' If yes, use Present Perfect.

Не купих хляб (Yesterday). Не съм купил хляб (So we have none now).

Exaggerate the '-ла' ending slightly to ensure you don't sound masculine.

Notas culturais

Bulgarians often use the negative Present Perfect to politely decline food or drinks, implying they 'haven't gotten around to it' rather than a flat 'no'.

In Western Bulgaria (Sofia region), you might hear people drop the 'е' in the 3rd person singular, but this is considered non-standard in writing.

News anchors strictly use the Present Perfect to report events that haven't happened yet to maintain objectivity.

The Bulgarian Present Perfect evolved from the Old Church Slavonic perfect, which used the auxiliary 'быти' (to be) and the resultative participle in -lъ.

Perguntas frequentes (8)

Yes, if you mean 'I haven't eaten (today/yet)'. Use `Не ядох` only if you mean 'I didn't eat (at that specific time yesterday)'.

In Bulgarian, the negative particle `не` always precedes the verb it negates. Since `съм` is the auxiliary, it goes first.

No, but it's very common. Without `още`, the sentence just means 'I haven't done it.' With `още`, it means 'I haven't done it *yet*'.

The L-participle will end in `-ли` (plural). Gender distinction only exists in the singular (`-л`, `-ла`, `-ло`).

Not exactly. `Не бях` is 'I wasn't' (Past Simple). `Не съм бил` is 'I haven't been'.

Yes! Bulgarian is a pro-drop language. `Не съм видял` is perfectly fine and very natural.

Use `Никога не съм...`. Remember that Bulgarian uses double negatives (`никога` + `не`).

Yes. For a negative question, use `Не си ли...`. Example: `Не си ли чул?` (Haven't you heard?)
