Spanish Guessing Game: The Conditional of Conjecture (Serían las cinco)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the conditional tense to express probability, conjecture, or estimation about a past event or state.
- Use it to guess the time in the past: 'Serían las tres' (It was probably 3:00).
- Use it to speculate about past actions: '¿Qué haría ella allí?' (What could she have been doing there?).
- Use it for past approximations: 'Tendría unos veinte años' (He was likely around twenty years old).
Overview
The Spanish simple conditional tense, el condicional simple, is typically introduced as the equivalent of the English "would," used for politeness (¿Podrías ayudarme?), hypotheticals (Si fuera rico, viajaría), and expressing the future from a past perspective (Dijo que llegaría a las ocho). At an advanced level, however, you access one of its most essential modal functions: expressing conjecture, speculation, or probability about past events. This is known as the Conditional of Conjecture or condicional de conjetura.
It functions as the past-tense counterpart to the Future of Probability. Just as you use the future tense to speculate about the present (¿Dónde estará María? — "I wonder where María is?"), you use the conditional to speculate about the past (¿Dónde estaría María? — "I wonder where María was?"). This tense shift allows a speaker to report information without committing to its absolute truth.
It replaces a factual past tense (pretérito indefinido or imperfecto) with a speculative one, signaling that the statement is an inference, not a verified fact. Instead of stating Eran las diez ("It was ten o'clock"), a speaker making an estimation says Serían las diez ("It must have been around ten o'clock"). Mastering this is fundamental to achieving a natural, nuanced, and authoritative command of Spanish.

How This Grammar Works
pretérito (llegó) and imperfecto (llegaba) present information as objective and factual.Serían las cinco, you are right now, in this moment, making an educated guess about what the time was at a point in the past.- Factual (
Imperfecto):En esa época, la gente tenía menos prisa.(In that era, people were in less of a hurry.) — A statement presented as a known fact. - Speculative (
Condicional):En esa época, la gente tendría menos prisa, imagino.(In that era, people must have been in less of a hurry, I imagine.) — A hypothesis based on general knowledge or feeling.
Formation Pattern
El paquete llegó ayer. ("The package arrived yesterday.")
llegó, from the infinitive llegar.
llegar) and apply the conditional ending that corresponds to the subject (el paquete → él). This results in llegaría.
El paquete llegaría ayer. ("The package probably arrived yesterday.")
Te lo dijo tu hermano ("Your brother told you that") becomes a conjecture: Te lo diría tu hermano, ¿no? ("Your brother probably told you that, right?"). The stem of decir changes to dir-, and the -ía ending is added. The meaning shifts entirely from certainty to probability.
When To Use It
- Approximating Past Time, Age, and Quantities: This is its most common function in daily conversation. When you lack precise information, you use the conditional to provide a reasonable estimate.
¿Cuánta gente había en la boda? / - No sé, pero seríamos unos doscientos.(How many people were at the wedding? / - I don't know, but there must have been about two hundred of us.)El edificio era antiguo. Tendría más de cien años.(The building was old. It was probably more than a hundred years old.)
- Expressing Wonder or Puzzlement about a Past Event: This is used to formulate hypotheses or rhetorical questions about the causes or details of a situation you didn't witness fully. It is a cornerstone of narrative and internal monologue.
La tienda estaba cerrada, aunque eran las once. ¿Qué pasaría?(The store was closed, even though it was eleven. I wonder what happened?)De repente se puso a llorar. ¿Quién la llamaría para darle una noticia así?(She suddenly started crying. Who could have possibly called her to give her news like that?)
- Reporting Unconfirmed Information (Journalism & Hearsay): In news reporting, historical accounts, and gossip, this tense is used to present information that is likely but not officially verified. It distances the speaker/writer from the claim, signaling it as an allegation or a strong probability. For this, the conditional perfect (
habría+ participle) is also extremely common. Según fuentes cercanas, el ministro estaría a punto de dimitir.(According to close sources, the minister was allegedly on the verge of resigning.)Me contaron que se fue de la fiesta sin despedirse. Estaría enfadado.(I was told he left the party without saying goodbye. He must have been angry.)
- Softening a Statement or Shifting Responsibility: Using the conditional can be a polite or subtle way to offer an explanation for a mistake or failure. It sounds less direct and more speculative than a blunt past tense, thereby mitigating blame.
¿Por qué no terminaste el informe? / - Lo siento, calcularía mal el tiempo necesario.(Why didn't you finish the report? / - I'm sorry, I must have miscalculated the time needed.) This is softer thancalculé mal.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing Timeframes (Conditional vs. Future of Probability): This is the most critical distinction. The conditional speculates about the PAST. The future tense speculates about the PRESENT.
- Guess about now:
¿Qué hora es?→Serán las diez.(It's probably ten o'clock right now.) Correct. - Guess about the past:
¿A qué hora empezó la película?→Serían las diez.(It probably started at ten o'clock in the past.) Correct. - The Error: Answering
¿Qué hora es?with*Serían las diez.is incorrect, as it implies you're guessing about a time in the past.
- Redundancy with Adverbs of Probability: While not strictly ungrammatical, combining the conditional of conjecture with adverbs like
probablemente, seguramente, orquizásis often redundant. The verbcostaríaalready implies "probably cost." - Natural:
En esa época, un coche costaría una fortuna. - Redundant/Over-emphatic:
*En esa época, probablemente un coche costaría una fortuna. - Nuance: Speakers sometimes do this for emphasis or clarification, but as a learner, your default should be to trust the verb to convey the meaning of probability on its own.
- Forgetting the Irregular Stems: A sure sign of a non-native speaker is using a regular conditional form for an irregular verb. Common errors include
hacería,deciría, or*sabería. - Incorrect:
¿Qué hacerías tú en su situación?(when wondering what someone did*) - Correct:
¿Qué haría él en esa situación?(I wonder what he did in that situation?)
- Literal Translation of "Would": Do not automatically equate
-íawith "would." In the context of conjecture, it corresponds to English phrases like "must have been," "was probably," "I wonder if/what/why," or "could have been." Tendría unos veinte años.does not mean "He would be about twenty years old." It means "He was probably about twenty years old."
Contrast With Similar Patterns
To achieve C2-level precision, you must differentiate this structure from its close grammatical relatives. Each carries a distinct nuance.
| Pattern | Example | Function & Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| Conditional of Conjecture | Tendría unos 20 años. | Probability/Speculation about the Past. This is the most common, fluid, and integrated choice for expressing a guess in most registers. It feels natural and spontaneous. |
| Future of Probability | Tendrá unos 20 años. | Probability/Speculation about the Present. Used to guess about current states. Será mi madre means "That's probably my mom (at the door now)." |
| Deber de + Infinitivo | Debía de tener unos 20 años. | Logical Deduction about the Past. More formal and deliberate than the conditional. It implies the guess is based on evidence or reasoning ("evidence suggests"). Often interchangeable, but feels less spontaneous. More common in Spain than in many parts of Latin America. |
| Poder + Infinitivo | Pudo tener 20 años. | Possibility in the Past. Crucially, this expresses what was possible, not what was probable. It means it's a possibility, but carries no implication that the speaker believes it to be true. Pudo llover = "It could have rained," not "It probably rained." |
| Pretérito Imperfecto | Tenía 20 años. | Factual Description in the Past. States a known fact. Presents background information as certain, with no speculation. |
| Pretérito Indefinido | Tuvo 20 años. | Factual Completed Event. States a known, completed fact. El accidente ocurrió a las cinco is a factual report. El accidente ocurriría a las cinco is a guess. |
Real Conversations
Scenario 1
Subject
Hola Marta,
Revisando mis notas, la reunión inicial con el cliente fue el 4 de marzo. En esa llamada, ellos ya mencionaron los problemas con el proveedor. Entiendo que la decisión final de cambiar de proveedor se tomó después, pero no tengo la fecha exacta. Sería a mediados de abril, ¿verdad? Porque recuerdo que para mayo ya estábamos trabajando con el nuevo.
Analysis
Sería to propose a probable date (a mediados de abril) that they are not 100% certain of. It's a professional way to form a hypothesis and ask for confirmation without presenting a potentially incorrect date as a fact.*Scenario 2
- Javier: Vi a tu ex el otro día en el centro. Parecía muy apurado.
- Sofía: ¿Ah, sí? Ni idea. Iría a alguna reunión de trabajo. Siempre anda corriendo.
Analysis
Iría to offer a quick, low-stakes hypothesis about why her ex was in a hurry. She doesn't know for sure, but based on her past knowledge of him, it's a highly probable reason. It translates to "He was probably going..."*Scenario 3
- Abuelo: Esta foto es de cuando vivíamos en el pueblo.
- Nieto: Qué pasada. Esta casa ya no existe, ¿no? ¿De qué año sería la foto? ¿Los 60?
- Abuelo: Uf, antes. Fíjate en el coche. Yo ahí tendría unos ocho o nueve años, así que... diría que de 1955.
Analysis
sería to wonder aloud about the date of the photo. The grandfather uses tendría to estimate his own age, which then serves as a key piece of evidence to deduce the year. This is a classic example of using conjecture to reconstruct past information.*Progressive Practice

(Fact) Los antiguos romanos no sabían la verdad. → (Speculation) Los antiguos romanos no sabrían la verdad.
- Level 3: Contextual Application
Respond to the following situations with a plausible sentence using the conditional of conjecture.
You call your friend, but they don't answer their phone. You guess why. (Sample answer: Estaría en una reunión o en el metro.)
You are discussing a historical figure and their motivations. You speculate on what they were thinking. (Sample answer: ¿Qué pensaría en ese momento de soledad?)
You notice your company's website was down for an hour last night. In a team meeting, you offer a possible reason. (Sample answer: Habría algún problema con el servidor o estarían haciendo mantenimiento.)
Quick FAQ
No. The simple conditional's conjectural use is strictly for speculating about the past. Its temporal domain is retrospective. To speculate about the future, you must use the future tense, often combined with an adverb of probability (e.g., Probablemente lloverá mañana).
It is universal. The conditional of conjecture is a core grammatical function, not a stylistic choice tied to a specific register. It is equally at home in a casual text message (llegaría a las 3) and a formal academic paper (Los autores buscarían explicar el fenómeno...).
They operate in different dimensions of reality. The Conditional of Conjecture is in the indicative mood, which deals with the real world. It expresses a high degree of probability about something that is presumed to have happened. The subjunctive mood expresses non-facts: desires, doubts, and unreal conditions (Si yo fuera..., Dudo que venga...).
vos pronoun?Yes, perfectly. The conjugation for vos is identical to tú in the conditional. You would say vos tendrías, vos serías, and vos dirías just as you would for tú, following the standard voseo pattern of usage.
habría + participle) for conjecture too?Yes, and it is essential for C2-level expression. The conditional perfect (habría llegado, habría dicho) is used to speculate about a past action that was completed, often before another past event. For example: Cuando llegué, la tienda ya estaba cerrada; habrían cerrado antes. (When I arrived, the store was already closed; they must have closed early.) It allows for speculation within more complex narrative sequences.
