At the A1 level, 'استنباط‌کردن' is much too difficult to use actively. However, you can think of it as a very fancy way of saying 'to understand' (فهمیدن). Imagine you see someone with an umbrella. You 'understand' (infer) it is raining. At this stage, you should focus on the basic verb 'فهمیدن' (fahmardan). You won't need to say 'estenbāt-kardan' when buying bread or introducing yourself. Just remember that Persian has very long words for 'thinking' and 'understanding' that people use in books and on the news. If you see this word, just think: 'Oh, someone is making a smart conclusion!'
At the A2 level, you are starting to use more compound verbs. 'استنباط‌کردن' is a compound verb like 'کار کردن' (to work). Even though you won't use it in daily life, you might see it in a simple news headline. It means 'to figure out' something from a clue. For example, 'I see the light is off, so I infer no one is home.' In A2, you would usually say 'پس کسی خانه نیست' (So no one is home). 'Estenbāt' is the formal version of that 'so'. It is good to recognize the 'kardan' part, which you already know how to conjugate!
At the B1 level, you are moving into intermediate territory. You should begin to recognize 'استنباط‌کردن' in reading passages about history or society. It is more than just a guess; it's a 'logical guess'. You might start to use it in written assignments to sound more academic. For instance, instead of saying 'I think the author is sad,' you could write 'I infer from the text that the author is sad.' This shows your teacher you are trying to use higher-level vocabulary. Remember to use 'az' for the evidence you are using to make your inference.
At the B2 level, this is a key word for you. You should be able to use 'استنباط‌کردن' in debates and formal essays. You need to distinguish it from 'حدس زدن' (guessing). When you are analyzing a situation—like why the economy is changing or what a character in a movie is thinking—you should use 'استنباط‌کردن'. You should also be comfortable with its nominal form 'استنباط'. For example, 'استنباط شما از این خبر چیست؟' (What is your inference/interpretation of this news?). You are expected to handle the formal register where this word lives.
At the C1 level, you should use 'استنباط‌کردن' with nuance. You should know that it carries a heavy logical and sometimes legal weight. You should be able to use it in the passive voice ('استنباط می‌شود که...') to sound objective in research papers. You should also understand its relationship to Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and how it differs from 'استنتاج' (deduction) or 'استقراء' (induction). In a professional setting, using this word correctly demonstrates that you have a deep, educated command of the Persian language and can engage in complex analytical discussions.
At the C2 level, 'استنباط‌کردن' is a tool for precision. You use it to discuss the hermeneutics of classical poetry or the subtle implications of diplomatic language. You understand the etymological roots (drawing water from a well) and can use this metaphor in literary writing. You can navigate the most complex legal and philosophical texts where 'estenbāt' is the central mechanism of the argument. You are not just using a word; you are participating in a long tradition of Persian and Arabic logic and scholarship. Your usage is indistinguishable from that of a highly educated native speaker.

استنباط‌کردن in 30 Seconds

  • To infer or deduce information from evidence.
  • A formal compound verb used in academic and legal contexts.
  • Rooted in the idea of 'extracting' meaning like water from a well.
  • Requires the preposition 'az' to indicate the source of evidence.

The Persian verb استنباط‌کردن (estenbāt-kardan) is a sophisticated term that translates primarily to 'to infer,' 'to deduce,' or 'to derive' a conclusion based on available evidence or logical reasoning. It is a compound verb consisting of the Arabic-rooted noun 'استنباط' and the Persian light verb 'کردن'. In its essence, it describes the mental process of looking beyond the surface level of information to reach a deeper understanding or a logical consequence. While in everyday conversation people might use simpler terms like 'فهمیدن' (to understand) or 'حدس زدن' (to guess), استنباط‌کردن implies a more rigorous, structured, and intellectual approach to forming an opinion. It is the difference between a random guess and a detective's conclusion based on clues left at a crime scene.

Formal Contexts
This word is extremely common in legal, academic, and philosophical texts. Judges 'infer' the intent of a law; scientists 'infer' results from data.
Logical Deduction
It is used when one piece of information naturally leads to another. If the ground is wet, we can infer it rained.

از شواهد موجود می‌توان چنین استنباط کرد که او دروغ می‌گوید. (From the existing evidence, one can infer that he is lying.)

In contemporary Persian, you will hear this word on the news when analysts discuss political shifts, or in university lectures when professors discuss hermeneutics or literary criticism. It carries a weight of authority. When you use this word, you are signaling that your conclusion is not just an opinion, but a result of careful thought. It is the hallmark of the B2 and C1 levels of Persian proficiency, moving away from basic survival language into the realm of abstract thought and professional discourse. Historically, the root of the word relates to drawing water from a well, which is a beautiful metaphor for drawing 'meaning' from a 'source'.

قاضی از سکوت متهم، گناهکار بودن او را استنباط کرد. (The judge inferred his guilt from the defendant's silence.)

Using استنباط‌کردن requires understanding its grammatical behavior as a compound verb. The noun 'استنباط' remains static while the verb 'کردن' conjugates according to tense, person, and number. Because it is a transitive verb, it often takes a direct object (marked by 'را') or a 'که' (that) clause which details the conclusion being drawn. It is important to note that this verb is almost never used in very casual slang; if you are at a party with friends, you might say 'فکر کنم' (I think) or 'به نظرم' (in my opinion), but if you are discussing a serious topic, استنباط‌کردن adds a layer of intellectual sophistication.

Active Voice
من استنباط می‌کنم (I infer), تو استنباط کردی (You inferred).
Passive Voice
استنباط می‌شود (It is inferred). This is very common in academic writing to maintain objectivity.

ما نمی‌توانیم از این آمار، نتایج قطعی استنباط کنیم. (We cannot infer definitive results from these statistics.)

When constructing sentences, you will often use the preposition 'از' (from) to indicate the source or evidence. For example, 'از رفتار او' (from his behavior) or 'از سخنان رئیس‌جمهور' (from the president's words). This structure mirrors the English 'to infer from'. In advanced writing, you might see the word used in its nominal form, 'استنباط', followed by an ezafe: 'استنباطِ من این است که...' (My inference is that...). This adds a formal tone to your arguments. Always remember that 'estenbāt' implies a process; it is not a sudden realization, but a logical step taken by the mind.

آیا شما از این نامه چنین استنباط می‌کنید که او قصد استعفا دارد؟ (Do you infer from this letter that he intends to resign?)

You are most likely to encounter استنباط‌کردن in environments where critical thinking and analytical discourse are paramount. It is a staple of Persian news media, particularly during political analysis or legal reporting. When a new law is passed in Iran, legal experts often discuss how the 'شورای نگهبان' (Guardian Council) will استنباط (infer) the compatibility of the law with the constitution. Similarly, in the world of Persian literature and 'تفسیر' (interpretation/exegesis), scholars use this word to describe how they derive meaning from complex poetic verses by Hafez or Rumi. It is not a word you would hear at the grocery store, but it is a word you would definitely hear in a university seminar or a high-level business meeting.

News & Media
Journalists use it to analyze diplomatic gestures. 'تحلیلگران استنباط می‌کنند که روابط دو کشور رو به بهبود است' (Analysts infer that relations between the two countries are improving).
Academic Lectures
Professors use it when teaching logic, mathematics, or social sciences to describe the derivation of theorems or social trends.

در دادگاه، وکیل سعی کرد از تناقضات گویی شاهد، بی‌گناهی موکلش را استنباط کند. (In court, the lawyer tried to infer his client's innocence from the witness's contradictions.)

Furthermore, in the context of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), استنباط is a technical term for the process of 'Ijtihad', where a Mujtahid (legal scholar) derives religious rulings from primary sources like the Quran and Hadith. This gives the word a deeply rooted historical and religious significance in the Persian-speaking world. Even if you are not a religious scholar, knowing this context helps you appreciate the word's gravity. When an Iranian says 'من اینطور استنباط کردم', they are giving their opinion a certain 'legal' or 'logical' weight, suggesting that their view is based on a methodical reading of the situation.

پژوهشگران از نتایج آزمایش‌های مکرر، این فرضیه را استنباط کردند. (Researchers inferred this hypothesis from the results of repeated experiments.)

For English speakers learning Persian, the most common mistake is using استنباط‌کردن in situations that are too casual. If you are trying to say 'I guess it will rain today,' using 'استنباط می‌کنم' will make you sound like a robot or a very stiff academic. In that case, 'فکر کنم' (I think) or 'احتمالاً' (probably) is better. Another common error is confusing استنباط‌کردن with 'حدس زدن' (to guess). While they are related, 'حدس زدن' can be based on nothing but a feeling, whereas 'استنباط‌کردن' must be based on some form of evidence or logic.

Confusing with 'نتیجه گرفتن'
While 'نتیجه گرفتن' means 'to conclude' or 'to get a result', 'استنباط‌کردن' is the specific *process* of deriving that conclusion through reasoning. They are often interchangeable, but 'استنباط' is more formal.
Preposition Errors
Always remember to use 'از' (from) when stating your evidence. Saying 'استنباط کردن به' is incorrect.

اشتباه: من استنباط می‌کنم که ناهار چی داریم. (Wrong: I infer what we have for lunch - too formal.)
درست: من حدس می‌زنم که ناهار چی داریم. (Right: I guess what we have for lunch.)

Another nuance is the difference between 'استنباط' and 'استخراج' (extraction). While both involve taking something out of something else, 'استخراج' is usually physical (like extracting oil) or literal (extracting a quote from a book), whereas 'استنباط' is always a mental, logical process. Using 'استخراج کردن' for a logical conclusion is a common slip for learners. Finally, make sure to conjugate 'کردن' correctly. Since it's a compound verb, the stress falls on the last syllable of 'استنباط' when spoken, though the 'کردن' part carries the grammatical endings.

او از لحن سرد من، ناراحتی‌ام را استنباط کرد. (He inferred my upset from my cold tone.)

Understanding استنباط‌کردن becomes easier when you compare it to its synonyms and near-synonyms. Each has a slightly different 'flavor' or register. Depending on whether you are writing a legal brief, a scientific paper, or a personal essay, you might choose a different word to express the idea of reaching a conclusion.

نتیجه‌گیری کردن (Natije-giri kardan)
Meaning 'to conclude'. This is the most common alternative. It is slightly less formal than 'استنباط' and focuses on the end result rather than the logical process.
دریافتن (Daryāftan)
Meaning 'to realize' or 'to perceive'. This is more about an intuitive or sudden understanding. 'Estenbāt' is active and logical; 'Daryāftan' can be more passive.
قیاس کردن (Ghiyās kardan)
Meaning 'to compare' or 'to use analogy'. In logic, this is a specific type of inference (syllogism). Use this if your inference is based on comparing two similar situations.

می‌توان از این مقدمات، یک حکم کلی استنتاج کرد. (One can deduce a general ruling from these premises.)

Another very close word is استنتاج‌کردن (estentāj-kardan). In most contexts, 'استنباط' and 'استنتاج' are interchangeable. However, in technical logic, 'استنتاج' is often used for 'deduction' (moving from general to specific), while 'استنباط' can be broader, including 'induction' (moving from specific to general). If you are translating a Sherlock Holmes book, he 'estentāj' (deduces) things. If you are a social scientist looking at data to find a trend, you 'estenbāt' (infer) the trend. Choosing between these words shows a very high level of Persian mastery.

او از حرف‌های من، معنای دیگری برداشت کرد. (He interpreted/inferred another meaning from my words.)

How Formal Is It?

Fun Fact

The metaphor is that a scholar 'digs' into a text or evidence until the 'hidden truth' gushes out like water from a well.
