پوشاک
پوشاک in 30 Seconds
- Means 'clothing' or 'apparel'.
- Used mostly for stores and industry.
- It is a collective, uncountable noun.
- Do not use it for your daily outfit.
The Persian word پوشاک (pooshak) is a fundamental term in the language, functioning as a collective noun that translates directly to 'clothing', 'apparel', or 'garments'. Unlike the word لباس (lebas), which can refer to a single piece of clothing or an outfit, پوشاک encompasses the entire category of items worn on the body. It is widely used in both everyday conversation and formal contexts, particularly in commerce, industry, and retail. Understanding this word is essential for anyone looking to navigate shopping, fashion, or economic discussions in Persian-speaking regions.
- Morphology
- The word is derived from the present stem of the verb پوشیدن (pooshidan - to wear), which is پوش (poosh), combined with the suffix اک (-ak), which often denotes an instrument, result, or collection. Thus, پوشاک literally means 'that which is worn'.
او برای خرید پوشاک زمستانی به بازار رفت.
When you walk through a Persian bazaar or a modern shopping mall, you will frequently see signs for فروشگاه پوشاک (clothing store). It is a broad term that includes everything from shirts and pants to coats and undergarments. Because it is a collective noun, it is rarely pluralized in everyday speech, though the plural form پوشاکها (pooshak-ha) might occasionally appear in highly technical or academic texts discussing various types of apparel industries.
- Semantic Field
- Belongs to the semantic field of personal adornment, protection from the elements, and fashion.
صنعت پوشاک در این کشور بسیار پیشرفته است.
The cultural significance of پوشاک cannot be understated. In Persian literature and history, the evolution of garments reflects deep societal changes. While ancient texts might use words like جامه (jameh), modern Persian relies heavily on پوشاک for official and commercial categorization. For instance, you will see categories like پوشاک مردانه (men's clothing), پوشاک زنانه (women's clothing), and پوشاک بچهگانه (children's clothing) in every retail environment.
- Usage Context
- Primarily used in retail, manufacturing, and formal categorization rather than casual references to one's daily outfit.
قیمت پوشاک امسال افزایش یافته است.
To master this word, learners should practice recognizing it on store signs and in advertisements. It is an A1 level word because shopping is one of the first survival skills a language learner acquires. By understanding the root پوش, learners can also easily decode related words like پوشش (covering/attire) and تنپوش (garment).
ما به پوشاک گرم نیاز داریم.
نمایشگاه پوشاک فردا افتتاح میشود.
Using پوشاک correctly involves understanding its role as a category descriptor. It is most commonly used as a modifier or the head of a noun phrase in commercial and formal contexts. For example, when you want to specify the demographic for the clothing, you use the Ezafe construction: پوشاک + ـِ + [Demographic]. This gives us phrases like پوشاکِ مردانه (pooshak-e mardaneh - men's apparel) or پوشاکِ ورزشی (pooshak-e varzeshi - sportswear).
- Ezafe Construction
- Always use the Ezafe (-e) when linking پوشاک to an adjective or noun that describes the type of clothing.
من در بخش پوشاک کار میکنم.
In spoken Persian, while you might hear people say 'من لباس میخرم' (I am buying clothes), you will rarely hear 'من پوشاک میخرم'. Instead, پوشاک is used to refer to the store or the items as a collective commodity: 'رفتم فروشگاه پوشاک' (I went to the clothing store). This distinction is crucial for sounding natural. It elevates your Persian from basic translation to culturally accurate usage.
صادرات پوشاک نقش مهمی در اقتصاد دارد.
- Formal vs Informal
- پوشاک is inherently slightly more formal and categorical than لباس. Use it in writing, news, and business.
When discussing the fashion industry, پوشاک is the go-to term. You will read articles about 'طراحی پوشاک' (apparel design) rather than 'طراحی لباس' (though the latter is also used, it often refers to designing specific dresses or outfits). Furthermore, in charitable contexts, you might hear about 'جمعآوری پوشاک برای نیازمندان' (collecting clothing for the needy). Here, the collective nature of the word perfectly captures the idea of bulk garments.
این برند پوشاک بسیار معروف است.
- Compound Words
- It forms the basis of many compounds, such as پوشاکفروشی (clothing store).
فروش پوشاک اینترنتی زیاد شده است.
کیفیت پوشاک داخلی بهتر شده است.
The word پوشاک is ubiquitous in urban environments across Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan (though local variations exist). The most common place you will encounter this word is on the streets, specifically on the signboards of retail shops. A sign reading 'پوشاک ترک' (Turkish apparel) or 'پوشاک بانوان' (Ladies' apparel) is a staple of any commercial district. It is a visual anchor for shoppers navigating the city.
- Shopping Malls
- Used on directory boards to indicate the clothing section or floor.
طبقه دوم مخصوص پوشاک است.
Beyond the streets, you will hear it frequently in the news and media. Economic reports often discuss the 'بازار پوشاک' (apparel market), detailing inflation, import/export statistics, and the struggles or triumphs of local textile manufacturers. During the weeks leading up to Nowruz (the Persian New Year), the word dominates television and radio commercials as families rush to buy new clothes for the festivities, a tradition deeply rooted in Persian culture.
- E-commerce
- Online shopping platforms categorize their main fashion menus under the header پوشاک.
من از یک سایت پوشاک خرید کردم.
In academic and professional settings, universities offer degrees in 'طراحی و دوخت پوشاک' (Apparel Design and Sewing). Here, the term takes on a highly technical and artistic weight, representing a field of study rather than just items on a rack. You will also hear it in historical documentaries discussing the 'پوشاک سنتی' (traditional clothing) of various Iranian ethnic groups, such as the Kurds, Lurs, or Gilaks, where garments are a profound expression of identity.
- Charity Drives
- Used in campaigns asking for donations of winter coats and shoes.
آنها پوشاک زمستانی اهدا کردند.
تاریخچه پوشاک ایران بسیار غنی است.
کارخانه پوشاک کارگران جدید استخدام میکند.
One of the most frequent mistakes learners make with the word پوشاک is treating it exactly like the English word 'clothes' in terms of daily, casual usage. While 'clothes' can be used to say 'I am putting on my clothes', translating this directly to 'من پوشاکم را میپوشم' sounds highly robotic and unnatural in Persian. For personal, individual items you are wearing, the correct word is لباس (lebas).
- Pluralization Error
- Adding the plural suffix 'ها' (ha) to make 'پوشاکها'. Since it is already a collective noun, this is redundant and incorrect in standard usage.
❌ غلط: من پوشاکهایم را شستم.
✅ درست: من لباسهایم را شستم.
Another common pitfall is confusion with the verb root. Because پوشاک comes from پوشیدن (to wear), learners sometimes try to use it as an adjective or an active participle. It is strictly a noun. You cannot say someone is 'پوشاک' (meaning dressed); you would say they are 'پوشیده' (covered/dressed). Understanding the suffix 'اک' helps clarify that this word represents the *object* of the action, not the action or the state itself.
- Countability
- پوشاک is uncountable. Do not use numbers directly before it without a measure word (like تکه - piece).
❌ غلط: من سه پوشاک خریدم.
✅ درست: من سه تکه لباس خریدم.
Learners also sometimes mispronounce the word by stressing the first syllable too heavily. In Persian, the stress on nouns typically falls on the final syllable. Therefore, it should be pronounced poo-SHAK, not POO-shak. Incorrect stress can sometimes disrupt the flow of the sentence, even if the meaning is still understood. Finally, be careful not to confuse it with خوراک (khorak - food/feed), which shares the same suffix but comes from the verb خوردن (to eat).
- Suffix Confusion
- Do not confuse پوشاک (clothing) with خوراک (food). They are a rhyming pair often used together: خوراک و پوشاک (food and clothing).
تامین خوراک و پوشاک وظیفه مهمی است.
او در زمینه پوشاک تخصص دارد.
فروشگاه پوشاک تعطیل شد.
The Persian language is rich with vocabulary related to clothing, reflecting its long history of textile artistry. The most immediate synonym for پوشاک is لباس (lebas). While we have established that لباس is used for individual items and casual daily wear, it is still the closest equivalent. Another beautiful and slightly archaic synonym is جامه (jameh). You will encounter جامه mostly in classical poetry, literature, or historical contexts. For example, Rumi or Hafez might write about tearing one's جامه in grief or ecstasy, but you would never see a modern store called 'فروشگاه جامه'.
- لباس (Lebas)
- The most common, everyday word for clothes. Countable and can be pluralized (لباسها).
من لباس جدید خریدم.
Another related term is تنپوش (tan-poosh). This is a very descriptive, somewhat poetic compound word made of تن (body) and پوش (cover/wear). It literally means 'body-cover'. Today, تنپوش is often used in branding or boutique names to give a sense of artisanal, traditional, or high-quality clothing. It carries a warmer, more intimate connotation than the industrial and clinical پوشاک.
- رخت (Rakht)
- An older, colloquial term for clothes, often used in the context of laundry (رختچرک - dirty laundry) or bedding (رختخواب).
او رختهایش را شست.
We also have the word پوشش (pooshesh), which translates more accurately to 'covering' or 'attire' in a regulatory or sociological sense. When the government or institutions discuss dress codes, they use the word پوشش (e.g., پوشش اسلامی - Islamic attire). It focuses on the act of covering the body rather than the garments themselves as commercial items. Understanding these distinctions allows a learner to navigate Persian from the marketplace to the university.
- البسه (Albeseh)
- The Arabic broken plural of لباس, used in highly formal, legal, or bureaucratic texts to mean 'apparel'.
واردات البسه ممنوع شد.
این تنپوش هنر دست است.
قوانین پوشش تغییر کرد.

How to Use It
Treat it like 'apparel' or 'furniture' in English; don't count it directly.
پوشاک is formal/commercial; لباس is everyday/casual.
- Adding the plural suffix 'ها' to make پوشاکها in everyday speech.
- Using it to refer to a single item of clothing (e.g., saying 'این پوشاک زیباست' for one shirt instead of 'این لباس زیباست').
- Using a plural verb with it (e.g., پوشاک گران هستند instead of پوشاک گران است).
- Confusing it with خوراک (food) because they rhyme.

Tips
Singular Verb Agreement
Always pair پوشاک with a singular verb. Think of it like the English word 'clothing'. You say 'Clothing IS expensive', not 'Clothing ARE expensive'.
Shopping Signage
When walking in a Persian bazaar, look for the word پوشاک on signs to find clothes. It is much more common on store signs than the word لباس.
Stress the End
Make sure to put the emphasis on the second syllable: poo-SHAK. Stressing the first syllable sounds unnatural to native speakers.
Formal Writing
If you are writing an essay about the economy or culture, use پوشاک instead of لباس to elevate your writing style and sound more academic.
The Ezafe Link
Remember to use the Ezafe (-e) when adding a category. پوشاک زنانه (Pooshak-e zananeh) means women's clothing.
Rhyme Association
Remember the phrase 'خوراک و پوشاک' (Khorak o Pooshak), which means 'Food and Clothing'. They rhyme and are often used together to describe basic human needs.
No Plurals
Avoid saying پوشاکها (Pooshak-ha) in daily conversation. It is a collective noun and doesn't need a plural marker unless in highly technical texts.
Industry Term
Use it when talking about manufacturing. 'صنعت پوشاک' (San'at-e pooshak) is the standard term for the apparel industry.
Lebas vs Pooshak
Use لباس for 'I am washing my clothes' and پوشاک for 'The clothing store is closed'.
Root Word
Knowing the root پوش (poosh) helps you understand other words like پوشیدن (to wear) and پوشش (cover).
Memorize It
Mnemonic
POOH bear wears a SHIRT in a SHACK. POO-SHAK = Clothing.
