Prefixes for Aspect and Modality
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Armenian uses prefixes like 'կ-' (k-) and 'պիտի' (piti) to define whether an action is habitual, future, or modal.
- Use 'կ-' for habitual or continuous actions: 'կգրեմ' (I write/am writing).
- Use 'պիտի' or 'կ-' + future for future intent: 'պիտի գրեմ' (I will write).
- Use 'մի' for negative imperatives: 'մի գրիր' (Don't write).
Meanings
Prefixes in Armenian modify the base verb to indicate aspect (habitual vs. punctual) and modality (necessity vs. intent).
Habitual Aspect
Indicates recurring or ongoing actions.
“Նա կաշխատի այստեղ։”
“Մենք կխաղանք։”
Modal Necessity
Indicates obligation or future certainty.
“Պիտի գնամ։”
“Պիտի հասկանաս։”
