The Subjunctive as a Polite Command
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the subjunctive to make polite requests instead of direct commands by using the 'e' or 'a' stem plus the personal ending.
- Use for requests: 'Խնդրում եմ, գնաս' (Please go).
- Use for suggestions: 'Լավ կլինի, որ կարդաս' (It would be good if you read).
- Use for polite negation: 'Խնդրում եմ, չգնաս' (Please don't go).
Meanings
The Armenian subjunctive (often called the 'conjunctive' or 'aorist subjunctive') is used to express wishes, polite requests, and suggestions.
Polite Request
Softening a command to make it a request.
“Խնդրում եմ, որ օգնես։”
“Կարո՞ղ ես, որ գրես։”
Suggestion
Proposing an action to someone else.
“Գուցե գնանք։”
“Լավ կլինի, որ հանգստանաս։”
Indirect Command
Telling someone what to do through a third party or polite structure.
“Ասա նրան, որ գա։”
“Խնդրիր, որ բացի։”
