Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Romanian uses distinct pronouns and verb forms to show respect or intimacy based on social distance.

  • Use 'tu' for friends, family, and children (Informal). Example: 'Ce faci?'
  • Use 'dumneavoastră' for strangers, elders, and superiors (Formal). Example: 'Ce faceți?'
  • Formal 'dumneavoastră' always triggers the 2nd person plural verb form. Example: 'Sunteți gata?'
👤 (Status) ➔ 🗣️ (Tu/Dvs) + 🛠️ (Verb Ending)

Tone and Register vs Dumneata vs. Dumneavoastră

Both are formal, but 'Dumneata' is less formal and takes a singular verb.

Common Mistakes

Tu sunteți profesor.

Dumneavoastră sunteți profesor.

Mixing informal pronoun with formal verb.

Bună, domnule doctor.

Bună ziua, domnule doctor.

'Bună' is too casual for a doctor.

Dvs ești bine?

Dvs sunteți bine?

Using singular verb with formal pronoun.

Te rog, doamnă.

Vă rog, doamnă.

Using informal 'please' with a formal title.

Ce faceți, bunicule?

Vă rog să vii.

Vă rog să veniți.

Dumneata sunteți.

Dumneata ești.

'Dumneata' takes the singular verb, unlike 'Dumneavoastră'.

Vă mulțumesc mult, băieți.

Vă mulțumesc mult, domnilor.

Using 'băieți' (boys/guys) is too informal for a 'Vă' context unless they are close friends.

Domnia Sa sunteți...

Domnia Sa este...

'Domnia Sa' is 3rd person, not 2nd person.

💡

The 'Vă' Rule

When in doubt, use 'vă' and the plural verb. No one was ever offended by being too polite, but many have been offended by being too familiar.
⚠️

Don't mix!

If you start a sentence with 'Dumneavoastră', don't end it with 'te rog'. It sounds like a glitch in the matrix.
🎯

The Transition

Wait for the older or higher-status person to say 'Putem să ne tutuim' (We can use 'tu') before you switch registers.
💬

Sărut mâna

This literally means 'I kiss your hand'. It's a very common respectful greeting for women or elders, even if you don't actually kiss their hand.

Smart Tips

Default to 'dumneavoastră'. It's a 'safety first' approach in Romanian culture.

Ce faci? (to a 40-year-old stranger) Ce faceți? (to a 40-year-old stranger)

Use 'Vă contactez' instead of 'Îți scriu'.

Îți scriu pentru problemă. Vă contactez în legătură cu problema.

Remember the adjective matches the person's gender, not the plural verb.

Dumneavoastră sunteți amabili (to one woman). Dumneavoastră sunteți amabilă (to one woman).

Use 'Ați putea' (Could you) instead of 'Puteți' (Can you).

Puteți să mă ajutați? Ați putea să mă ajutați?

Pronunciation

/dum.ne̯a'vo̯as.trə/

Dumneavoastră stress

The stress is on the 'oa' syllable: dum-nea-VOAS-tră.

Văăă rog...

Vă emphasis

In formal requests, 'Vă' is often slightly elongated to show extra politeness.

Formal Question

Doriți ceva? ↗

Rising intonation at the end, but starting from a lower, more controlled pitch than informal questions.

Memorize It

Mnemonic

D-V-S: Distance, Venerability, Status. If any of these are high, use Dumneavoastră.

Visual Association

Imagine a bridge. 'Tu' is standing right next to you on the bridge. 'Dumneavoastră' is on the other side of a wide river, requiring a louder, more structured shout (the plural verb) to reach them.

Rhyme

Când cu șeful vrei să vorbesti, / Cu 'vă' și 'sunteți' să-l cinstești.

Story

Andrei meets his new boss. He accidentally says 'Ce faci?'. The boss looks confused. Andrei quickly corrects to 'Ce faceți, domnule director?'. The 'ți' at the end of the verb acts like a shield that restores the professional boundary.

Cultural Notes

Age is the primary factor. Even a CEO might address an elderly janitor with 'dumneavoastră' out of respect for their age.

In modern tech companies in Bucharest or Cluj, 'tutuire' (using 'tu') is the norm from day one, regardless of hierarchy.

Registers can be even more formal, with specific regional terms like 'măi' used carefully in informal settings.

The word 'dumneavoastră' comes from the phrase 'Domnia Voastră' (Your Lordship/Dominion).

FAQ (8)

Only if they explicitly ask you to ('Putem să ne tutuim'). In most Romanian companies, formality is the default.

Not inherently, but it can sound patronizing if used by a younger person to an older person. It's safer to stick to 'dumneavoastră'.

This is the 'plural of politeness'. It creates a symbolic distance that signifies respect.

It is the standard abbreviation for 'dumneavoastră' in writing.

Use 'dumneavoastră' and the plural verb, just as you would for one person.

'Bună' is informal. Use 'Bună ziua' for a formal or neutral setting.

It is often capitalized in formal letters (Dumneavoastră) to show extra respect, but it's not grammatically mandatory.

Most Romanians will understand you are a learner, but it might sound slightly 'jarring' or uneducated.
