To be forced to leave one's country or home and live in a foreign land, often as a punishment or for political reasons. It can also refer to being expelled from a group or community.
Think of 'EX-it' and 'Isle'. If you are exiled, you must EXIT your country and maybe live on a remote ISLE (island).
He was exiled from the school. → He was expelled from the school.
