In traditional schools (Gurukulams), questioning was a specific stage of learning called 'Vinathal'. It was considered the bridge between hearing and internalizing knowledge. The phrase 'Kēḷvi Kēḷ' is a popular sticker and t-shirt slogan in Tamil Nadu, representing the spirit of rationalism and social inquiry popularized by Periyar E.V. Ramasamy. In Sri Lankan Tamil dialects, the word 'Oru' (one) is often dropped, and the phrase becomes more clipped: 'Kēḷvi kēḷ'. In the diaspora (UK, Canada), parents use this phrase to encourage children to maintain their Tamil by asking questions in their native tongue rather than switching to English.
