Sleep is often discussed in relation to food. If someone hasn't slept well, they are often advised to eat 'thayir saadham' (curd rice) which is believed to have cooling properties that aid rest. In the 'Silicon Valley of South India,' lack of sleep is often joked about as a side effect of 'night shifts' for US/UK clients. It's a common bonding topic among young professionals. Elders might use the word 'உறக்கம்' (Urakkam) instead of 'தூக்கம்' (Thookkam). They might also link lack of sleep to 'pitham' (imbalance of bile/heat in the body). Many movie songs depict the hero being unable to sleep because of love, but they use 'தூக்கம் வரவில்லை' (can't sleep). 'தூக்கம் போதவில்லை' is usually reserved for comedy scenes involving tired sidekicks.
