Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Ukrainian consonants are either 'hard' (plain) or 'soft' (palatalized), which changes the meaning of words entirely.
- Soft consonants are produced by raising the middle of the tongue toward the hard palate, like in 'canyon'.
- The soft sign (ь) makes the preceding consonant soft, e.g., 'день' (day).
- Vowels like 'я', 'ю', 'є', 'і' also soften the consonant before them.
Meanings
