Expressing a need for water.
Contexto cultural
Offering water is the first act of hospitality. Even if you don't ask, a host will likely bring you water as soon as you sit down. During fasting days (over 200 a year), water is often the only sustenance allowed until the afternoon. Asking for water is common and respected. In the city, specifying 'bottled water' (ye-tashege wuha) is common due to health preferences, whereas in rural areas, water is often shared from a common source. Water is always served alongside the strong Ethiopian coffee to cleanse the palate. It is called 'Abol' water in some contexts.
Add 'Ebakih'
Add 'Ebakih' (to a man) or 'Ebakish' (to a woman) before the phrase to sound extra polite.
Tap Water
In many parts of Ethiopia, it's safer to ask for 'Ye-tashege wuha' (bottled water).

The 'Allu' Suffix
The '-allu' ending is your best friend. It works for 'I want' (efellegallu), 'I am' (allu), and 'I go' (ehedallu).
Handwashing
If someone brings you water in a basin, it's for washing hands, not drinking! Wait for the glass.
