O Segundo Condicional: Sonhando com 'If' e 'Would'

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Second Conditional to talk about imaginary situations in the present or future that are unlikely to happen.

  • Use 'If' + Past Simple for the condition: 'If I won the lottery...'
  • Use 'would' + base verb for the result: '...I would buy a boat.'
  • Use 'were' instead of 'was' for all subjects in formal English: 'If I were you...'
If + 🕰️ (Past Simple) + 👤 + 💭 (Would) + 🎬 (Verb)

Overview

### Overview
e
futuro do pretérito
If I were you, I would...
### How This Grammar Works
A oração do if é a condição e a oração principal é o resultado.
Se você colocar would dentro do if, a frase perde o sentido gramatical em inglês.
.
### Formation Pattern
A formação é muito lógica. Temos duas partes: a if clause e a main clause.
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| If Clause | If + Sujeito + Simple Past | If I lived in London... |
| Main Clause | Sujeito + would + Verbo base | ...I would visit Big Ben. |
Exemplos práticos:
  • If I had a car, I would drive to work.
  • She would be happy if she found a new job.
  • If they knew the truth, they wouldn't be so calm.
Note que o verbo to be tem uma peculiaridade: o uso de were para todas as pessoas (I, he, she, it). Embora no dia a dia informal muitos falem If I was, o uso do were é o padrão gramatical que demonstra um nível de inglês mais elevado e polido.
### When To Use It
Exemplo: If I won the lottery, I would buy a mansion.
If I were you, I would.... Exemplo: If I were you, I would talk to the manager about the promotion.
Exemplo: If I met a famous celebrity, I would ask for a selfie.
  1. 1Pedidos Polidos: Usar would torna o pedido mais suave e menos direto. Exemplo: Would you mind if I sat here?
### Common Mistakes
  1. 1Colocar 'would' no 'if': É o erro número 1. O brasileiro tende a traduzir literalmente o se eu teria. Ex: *
    If I would have money...
  1. 1Confundir 'will' com 'would': Às vezes, o aluno usa will na oração principal. Ex: *
If I studied, I will pass
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
Veja a diferença:
| Condicional | Estrutura | Sentido |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| First | If + Present, ... will + base | Real/Possível (ex: Se eu estudar, passarei) |
| Second | If + Past, ... would + base | Hipotético/Irreal (ex: Se eu estudasse, passaria) |
O First Conditional é sobre planos concretos (If I have time, I will call you). O Second é sobre imaginação (If I had time, I would call you).
### Quick FAQ
1. Posso usar 'could' no lugar de 'would'?
Sim! Exemplo: If I had a car, I could drive to the beach. (Eu poderia dirigir até a praia).
I would travel if I had money é exatamente igual a If I had money, I would travel.
3. Por que dizemos 'If I were you' e não 'If I was you'?
If I were you é a forma correta do subjuntivo.

The Second Conditional: Dreaming with 'If' and 'Would' vs First vs Second Conditional

Learners often use the 1st conditional for things that are actually impossible or very unlikely.

The Second Conditional: Dreaming with 'If' and 'Would' vs Second vs Third Conditional

Learners mix up 'would' and 'would have'.

Erros comuns

If I will be rich, I would buy a house.

If I were rich, I would buy a house.

Don't use 'will' in the if-clause for dreams.

If I have a car, I would drive.

If I had a car, I would drive.

You need the past tense to show it's a dream, not a real plan.

If I would win, I would travel.

If I won, I would travel.

The 'Double Would' mistake. Only use 'would' in the result part.

If I was you, I would go.

If I were you, I would go.

While 'was' is okay in speaking, 'were' is the correct form for advice in B1 exams.

If I would have known, I would tell you.

If I knew, I would tell you.

Imagine o 'Irreal'

If I win, I will celebrate.
⚠️

Não use 'would' duas vezes!

A parte do 'if' usa o 'Simple Past'.
If I studied, I would pass.
🎯

Domine 'If I were'

Embora 'if I was' seja ouvido às vezes, 'if I were' é a forma gramaticalmente correta para situações hipotéticas com 'to be'. Use sempre para soar mais fluente.
If I were a rich man.
🌍

Sugestões Polidas

Usar
If I were you, I would...
Demonstra empatia e evita soar exigente.
If I were you, I would apologize.
💡

Contrações são Legais

Em conversas informais, sinta-se à vontade para usar contrações como 'I'd' para 'I would', 'he'd' para 'he would', etc. "If I knew, I'd tell you."
⚠️

Forma Base é Rainha

Depois de 'would', 'could' ou 'might', sempre use a forma base do verbo (infinitivo sem 'to'). Não adicione '-ed' nem mude sua forma! I would go.

Smart Tips

Always start with 'If I were you, I'd...'. It's the most natural and polite way to suggest something in English.

You should buy that car. If I were you, I'd buy that car.

If you want to sound pessimistic or humble, use the 2nd conditional. If you want to sound optimistic, use the 1st.

If I get the job, I'll be happy. If I got the job, I'd be happy.

Use 'If it were possible' instead of 'If it's possible' to sound more professional and less demanding.

If it's possible, I want a refund. If it were possible, I would appreciate a refund.

Remember: I were, You were, He were, She were, It were, We were, They were. It's the only time 'he were' is correct!

If he was here... If he were here...

Perguntas frequentes (8)

In English, we use the 'modal past' to show that a situation is not real. It creates a 'distance' between the speaker and reality, not a distance in time.

It is not 'wrong' in casual conversation, and you will hear native speakers say it often. However, in formal writing and English exams (like IELTS or Cambridge), you should always use `If I were you`.

Yes! Use `could` to mean 'would be able to' and `might` to mean 'would perhaps'. Example: 'If I had a map, I might find the way.'

The 1st conditional is for real possibilities (If it rains, I'll stay home). The 2nd is for imaginary things (If it rained gold, I'd be rich).

Generally, no. We don't use `would` in the if-clause. The only exception is very formal polite requests like 'If you would be so kind...', but for B1 learners, the rule is: No would after if!

Only if the 'If' part comes first. 'If I were rich, I'd travel.' (Comma). 'I'd travel if I were rich.' (No comma).

No, that is the Third Conditional. The Second Conditional is only for imaginary situations in the *present* or *future*.

Yes, 'If I were to win' is just a more formal way of saying 'If I won'. It emphasizes that the event is very unlikely.
