Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Finnish uses the Latin alphabet with three extra letters (Å, Ä, Ö) and follows a strict one-letter-one-sound rule.

  • Every letter is pronounced exactly as it is written, every time.
  • Vowel length matters: double letters (aa) are held twice as long as single ones (a).
  • The letters Ä and Ö are distinct vowels, not variations of A and O.
