In the traditional 'Pol' houses of Ahmedabad, windows are designed for cross-ventilation. A 'Bandh Bari' in these houses often meant the residents were away or it was peak summer afternoon. According to Vastu, windows should be opened in the morning to let in 'Prana' (life energy). Keeping a 'Bandh Bari' all day is sometimes considered to lead to stagnant energy. A closed window and door can be a sign that a family is not ready for guests. Gujaratis are generally very social, so 'Bandh Bari' can imply a period of mourning or illness. The monsoon is a celebrated time. However, 'Bandh Bari' is a practical necessity to protect the 'Hindolo' (traditional wooden swing) found in many Gujarati homes from getting wet.
