Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Compound verbs combine a main action with an auxiliary verb to change the aspect or nuance of the action.
- Use -п/-ып/-іп + auxiliary verb (e.g., жатыр) for continuous actions: 'Ол оқып жатыр' (He is reading).
- Use -п/-ып/-іп + auxiliary verb (e.g., кетті) for completed or sudden actions: 'Ол айтып кетті' (He blurted it out).
- The main verb carries the root meaning, while the auxiliary verb adds the tense and aspect.

Meanings
Compound verbs in Kazakh consist of a main verb in the gerund form followed by an auxiliary verb. This structure allows speakers to specify the aspect, direction, or intensity of an action.
Continuous Aspect
Indicates an action currently in progress.
“Ол тамақ ішіп жатыр.”
“Балалар ойнап отыр.”
Completed/Directional Aspect
Indicates an action that is finished or moving away.
“Ол кетіп қалды.”
“Мен айтып бердім.”
