Directly saying 'No' to an elder is considered 'ədəbsizlik' (rudeness). 'Mən elə düşünmürəm' is the socially sanctioned way to maintain your opinion while showing respect. While Turkish is very similar (Pek öyle düşünmüyorum), Azerbaijani speakers tend to use 'Mən elə düşünmürəm' more frequently in casual conversation than their Turkish neighbors. In Tabriz and other southern cities, this phrase is often mixed with Persian-influenced politeness markers (ta'arof). It might be preceded by many compliments.
