In Danish, a 'd' following a vowel often becomes silent or transforms into a soft, breathy sound.

  • After a long vowel, 'd' often disappears: 'mad' (food) sounds like 'ma'.
  • After a short vowel, 'd' often remains or becomes a soft 'th' sound: 'rød' (red).
  • In many common words, the 'd' is completely silent regardless of spelling: 'hvad' (what).
