The flute is a beloved musical instrument known for its clear, bright, and often ethereal sound. In a traditional flute, sound is created by blowing a stream of air across an edge, causing the air column inside the tube to vibrate. This vibration produces a musical note. These instruments produce sound differently: clarinets use a single reed, while oboes and bassoons use a double reed. The saxophone, often made of metal, is also considered a woodwind because of its reed system. Other instruments that produce melodic sounds might be mistaken for a flute by beginners, such as a recorder (which is also a type of fipple flute, played differently) or even a whistle.
