The Adjective Shortcut

If you're not sure whether to add '-kan', check if the base is an adjective. If it is, 99% of the time you don't need '-kan'.
⚠️

Avoid Over-formalizing

Don't use 'memper-' in a warung (street stall). It sounds like you're reading a textbook. Use 'bikin' instead.
💬

The Passive Power

Indonesians love passive sentences. Practice 'diper-' to sound more like a native speaker in formal writing.
💡

Mempelajari Exception

Just memorize 'mempelajari' as a unique word. It's the only one where 'r' becomes 'l'.

Smart Tips

Use 'mempercepat'. It sounds much more professional than 'bikin cepat'.

Kita harus bikin cepat prosesnya. Kita harus mempercepat prosesnya.

Stop yourself before adding '-kan'. 'Memperbesar' is enough!

Saya memperluaskan kebun. Saya memperluas kebun.

Always use 'memperkenalkan'. It's the standard polite form.

Ini teman saya. Izinkan saya memperkenalkan teman saya.

Remember it's just the passive of 'memper-'. Treat it like any other passive verb.

Dia memperbaiki mobil. Mobil diperbaiki oleh dia.

发音

mem-per-be-sar [məm.pər.bə.sar]

The 'r' in memper-

The 'r' should be slightly trilled, but in fast speech, it often blends into the next consonant.

memper-BE-sar

Stress

Indonesian stress is generally on the penultimate syllable, but prefixes like memper- are never stressed.

Rising on Imperatives

Percepat! ↗

Conveys urgency in a command.

Memorize It

Mnemonic

Remember: 'Memper-' is like a 'Power-up' button for adjectives—it makes them 'more'.

Visual Association

Imagine a magnifying glass over a word. When you put 'memper-' in front of 'besar' (big), the magnifying glass makes it look even bigger.

Rhyme

Memper- plus adjective, keep it lean. No '-kan' at the end, if you know what I mean!

Story

A king wanted to 'memperistri' (marry) a princess. To impress her, he had to 'memperbaiki' (fix) his castle and 'memperluas' (expand) his kingdom. He spent his days 'mempelajari' (studying) poetry to 'mempercantik' (beautify) his speech.

In old stories, 'memper-' is used for royal actions, like 'memperhamba' (to take as a slave/servant).
