Subjunctive Suffix (-a/-ə)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the -a/-ə suffix to express wishes, suggestions, or purpose, often paired with 'kaş' (if only) or 'gərək' (should).
- Add -a/-ə to the verb stem based on vowel harmony: 'al-a' vs 'gəl-ə'.
- Use a buffer 'y' if the verb stem ends in a vowel: 'oxu-y-a'.
- The 1st person plural uses -aq/-ək: 'Gedək!' (Let's go!).
Meanings
The subjunctive mood (Arzu şəkli) is used to express desires, intentions, possibilities, or suggestions that are not yet facts.
Direct Wishes
Expressing a hope or desire, usually accompanied by the particle 'kaş' (if only).
“Kaş mən də sizinlə gələm.”

Suggestions (Hortative)
Making a proposal or suggestion, especially in the 1st person plural ('Let's...').
“Gedək çay içək.”

Necessity/Obligation
Used with 'gərək' to indicate what should or must happen.
“Gərək sən bunu biləsən.”
“Gərək biz vaxtında çataq.”
Purpose Clauses
Used after the conjunction 'ki' to express the purpose of an action.
“Mən bura gəlmişəm ki, səni görəm.”

Easily Confused
Both express wishes, but the Optative is more common for 'I' and 'We' in daily speech.
The 3rd person plural endings (-arlar vs -alar) sound very similar.
