Every year, the Estonian Rescue Board issues a 'jääle mineku keeld' (prohibition to go on ice). Ignoring this is not just 'walking on thin ice' metaphorically, but a legal offense. Similar to Estonia, Finns use 'heikoilla jäillä'. Because of the shared climate, the literal and figurative meanings are equally strong in both cultures. In the Nordics, the 'ice' metaphor is often linked to the concept of 'common sense' (talupojamõistus). If you fall through thin ice, it's often seen as your own failure to read nature.
