شمعهای روی کیک تولد را فوت کن.
من دوستانم را برای تولد به رستوران دعوت کردم.
- Zadruz (زادروز)
- This is a pure Persian (Farsi) word, composed of 'zad' (born) and 'ruz' (day). It is highly formal, poetic, and often used to refer to the birthdays of historical figures, famous poets, or in very formal written invitations.
امروز زادروز فردوسی، شاعر بزرگ ایران است، نه تولد یک فرد عادی.

- Derived from the same Arabic root as tavallod, milad is almost exclusively reserved for the birth of religious figures, prophets, and Imams. It carries a heavy tone of reverence and sanctity.
جشن میلاد پیامبر بسیار متفاوت از یک تولد معمولی است.

'Tavallod bazi' is a slang term used to describe the whole process of partying, buying gifts, and celebrating excessively.
The word is universally understood across all Persian-speaking regions (Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan), though pronunciation may vary slightly (e.g., Tajiks might pronounce the vowels differently).
- Using 'dashtan' (to have) instead of 'gereftan' (to take) for throwing a party. Incorrect: من تولد دارم. Correct: من تولد میگیرم.
- Forgetting the ezafe when making compound nouns. Incorrect: کیک تولد (keyk tavallod). Correct: کیکِ تولد (keyk-e tavallod).
- Using 'milad' or 'zadruz' for casual, everyday birthdays. These are formal/religious terms. Stick to 'tavallod'.
- Translating 'Happy Birthday' literally word-for-word. Incorrect: تولد شاد. Correct: تولدت مبارک (Tavallodet mobarak).
- Mispronouncing the word by ignoring the double 'l' (tashdid), saying 'tavalod' instead of 'tavallod'.
نصائح
The Ezafe is Essential
Never forget the ezafe (-e) when combining tavallod with other words. It is 'jashn-e tavallod' (birthday party), not 'jashn tavallod'. This small linking sound is crucial for sounding fluent.
Verb Choice Matters
Always pair tavallod with the verb 'gereftan' (to take) when talking about hosting a party. Using 'dashtan' (to have) sounds like a direct, unnatural translation from English.
The Birthday Treat
In Iran, if it is your birthday and you invite friends out to a cafe or restaurant, it is generally expected that you will pay the bill. It is your treat to them for celebrating with you.
Mind the Tashdid
The double 'l' in tavallod is important. Linger on the 'l' sound slightly (ta-val-lod) to pronounce it correctly. Ignoring the tashdid makes your Persian sound sloppy.
Formal vs. Informal
Know your audience. Use 'Tavallodet mobarak' for friends and 'Tavallodetoon mobarak' for elders, bosses, or people you don't know well. Respect is key in Persian.
Official Forms
When filling out forms in Iran, look for 'تاریخ تولد' (tarikh-e tavallod). You will need to know your birth date in the solar Jalali calendar, not just the Gregorian one.
Avoid 'Milad' for Friends
Do not use the word 'milad' to wish your friend a happy birthday. It is reserved for religious figures and sounds extremely out of place in casual conversation.
Gift Giving Etiquette
When giving a 'kado-ye tavallod' (birthday gift), it is polite to say 'Ghabele shoma ro nadare' (It is not worthy of you). The receiver will usually reply with thanks and compliments.
Catching the Suffixes
In fast spoken Persian, the possessive suffixes attach directly to the word. Train your ear to catch 'tavallodam' (my bday), 'tavallodet' (your bday), and 'tavallodesh' (his/her bday).
Metaphorical Births
You can use tavallod metaphorically just like in English. 'Tavallod-e yek aghaaz' means the birth of a beginning. It's a great way to sound more advanced in your writing.

Forgetting a close friend's or family member's birthday is considered a major offense. Showing up empty-handed to a birthday party is also frowned upon.
Blowing out candles and making a wish is standard. Cutting the cake often involves a playful tradition where the person with the knife dances and demands 'shabash' (money) before cutting the cake (raghs-e chaghoo).

الأسئلة الشائعة
10 أسئلةThe most common and natural way to say Happy Birthday is 'Tavallodet mobarak' (تولدت مبارک). If you are speaking to someone older or in a formal setting, you should use 'Tavallodetoon mobarak' (تولدتون مبارک). It literally translates to 'Your birthday be blessed'.
In Persian, you do not 'throw' or 'have' a birthday party; you 'take' it. The correct verb is 'gereftan' (گرفتن). For example, 'I am throwing a party' is 'Man tavallod migiram' (من تولد میگیرم).
Generally, no. While it can be understood, it is considered too casual. For religious figures like Prophets or Imams, the Arabic-derived word 'Milad' (میلاد) or 'Veladat' (ولادت) is used to show respect and reverence.
In casual conversation, you can ask 'Tavallodet key hast?' (تولدت کی هست؟), which means 'When is your birthday?'. In a more formal setting, you might ask 'Tarikh-e tavallod-e shoma che zamani ast?' (تاریخ تولد شما چه زمانی است؟).
'Tarikh-e tavallod' (تاریخ تولد) literally means 'date of birth'. You will frequently see this phrase on official documents, bank forms, and ID cards. It is the formal, bureaucratic way to refer to when you were born.
No, 'tavallod' is strictly a noun. To use it like an adjective in English (e.g., birthday cake), you must use the Persian ezafe construction to link two nouns. So, 'birthday cake' becomes 'keyk-e tavallod' (کیک تولد).
'Tavallod' is the everyday, common word for birthday. 'Zadruz' (زادروز) is a purely Persian word that is highly formal and poetic. You would use 'zadruz' for a famous poet or a historical figure, but not for your friend's weekend party.
Most Iranians celebrate their personal birthdays according to the solar Jalali calendar, which is the official calendar of Iran. However, religious birthdays (Milad) are celebrated according to the lunar Islamic calendar.
It is a 'surprise birthday party'. The English word 'surprise' has been adopted into Persian as 'soorpriz' (سورپرایز). So, 'tavallod-e soorpriz gereftan' means to throw a surprise birthday party for someone.
You would say 'Man baraye tavallodesh kado kharidam' (من برای تولدش کادو خریدم). Notice the use of the preposition 'baraye' (for) and the possessive suffix '-esh' (his/her) attached to tavallod.
