The 'Kamo' Test

If you can ask 'Kamo?' (Where to?), use Accusative. If you must ask 'Gdje?' (Where?), use Locative.
⚠️

Islands are Surfaces

Always use 'na' for islands. 'U Hvaru' means you are in the town of Hvar; 'Na Hvaru' means you are on the island.
🎯

Feminine Shortcut

Just remember: -U for movement (into), -I for staying (in). It rhymes with 'U-into, I-in'.
💬

Event Logic

Think of events as 'platforms' you stand on. That's why we say 'na koncertu' and 'na poslu'.

Smart Tips

Use 'na kavu' or 'na ručak' even if you are going inside the building, because you are focusing on the event.

Idem u kavu. Idem na kavu.

Instantly recognize it as movement or a destination.

Ona je u školu. Ona ide u školu.

Always use 'na poslu' (at work) and 'na posao' (to work). Never use 'u'.

Ja sam u poslu. Ja sam na poslu.

Remember that Locative always adds an -u, while Accusative (for things) stays the same as the dictionary form.

U grad sam. U gradu sam.

تحدٍّ

Look around your room. Name 3 things you can put 'na stol' (Acc) and 3 things that are already 'u ormaru' (Loc).

ملاحظات ثقافية

In coastal regions, people might use 'na' more frequently for locations that would take 'u' in standard Croatian, reflecting Italian influence.

The 'kajkavian' influence often leads to shorter vowels in endings, but the Acc/Loc distinction remains strict.

The phrase 'Idem na kavu' (I'm going for coffee) is a social institution. It doesn't always mean you will drink coffee; it means you are going to socialize.

Derived from Proto-Slavic *vъ (in) and *na (on). The case distinction (Acc/Loc) is a common Indo-European heritage shared with Latin and Greek.

الأسئلة الشائعة (8)

In Croatian, 'posao' (work) is seen as an activity or status, which takes 'na'. 'Ured' (office) is a physical building/room, which takes 'u'.

Generally, no. It sounds very wrong to native speakers. Always use `na` for islands like Hvar, Krk, or Korčula.

The rule still applies! For example, `u šume` (into the forests - Acc) vs. `u šumama` (in the forests - Loc).

Both are used, but `u ljeto` (Locative) means 'during the summer', while `na ljeto` (Accusative) often means 'this coming summer'.

Think: Is it a container (u) or a surface/event (na)? When in doubt, most buildings are 'u' and most open spaces are 'na'.

Yes! 'Iz' (from inside) is the opposite of 'u', and 'sa' (from surface) is the opposite of 'na'.

Countries take 'u', but peninsulas (like the Balkans) take 'na' because they are viewed as geographical surfaces.

If you are already in the room and just walking around, use Locative: `Hodam u sobi`. If you are entering the room, use Accusative: `Ulazim u sobu`.
