Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Cohesion markers are the 'glue' of Lao, turning isolated sentences into a logical, flowing narrative or argument.

  • Use `ແລະ` (lae) for simple addition, but `ນອກຈາກນັ້ນ` (nok chak nan) for academic 'furthermore'.
  • Contrast ideas using `ແຕ່` (tae) for 'but' or `ເຖິງຢ່າງໃດກໍຕາມ` (theung yang dai kor tam) for 'however'.
  • Show cause and effect with `ເພາະວ່າ` (phro wa) for 'because' and `ດັ່ງນັ້ນ` (dang nan) for 'therefore'.
Sentence A + 🔗 (Marker) + Sentence B = 🌊 Flow

Meanings

Cohesion markers are linguistic tools (conjunctions, adverbs, and phrases) used to link sentences and paragraphs, signaling the logical relationship between ideas.

1

Additive Cohesion

Adding information or expanding on a point.

“ລາວເປັນຄົນເກັ່ງ ແລະ ລາວຍັງເປັນຄົນໃຈດີອີກດ້ວຍ.”

“ນອກຈາກນັ້ນ, ພວກເຮົາຄວນພິຈາລະນາເລື່ອງງົບປະມານ.”

2

Adversative Cohesion

Expressing contrast, opposition, or unexpected results.

“ຝົນຕົກໜັກ ແຕ່ ລາວກໍຍັງອອກໄປແລ່ນ.”

“ເຖິງຢ່າງໃດກໍຕາມ, ພວກເຮົາຍັງມີຄວາມຫວັງ.”

3

Causal Cohesion

Linking causes to their effects or providing reasons.

“ເພາະວ່າລາວບໍ່ສະບາຍ, ລາວເລີຍບໍ່ມາເຮັດວຽກ.”

“ດັ່ງນັ້ນ, ພວກເຮົາຈຶ່ງຕ້ອງເລື່ອນການປະຊຸມ.”

🎯

The 'Kor' Rule

Whenever you use a contrast marker like 'tae' or 'theung wa', always try to put 'kor' after the subject in the next part. It makes you sound much more native.
⚠️

Avoid 'And' Overload

If you find yourself saying 'lae' more than twice in a sentence, switch to 'lae-kor' or 'ruam thang' (including).
💬

Softening Disagreement

Use 'theung yang dai kor tam' to disagree politely. It shows you've listened to the other person's point before presenting your own.
💡

Visual Cues

In Lao writing, there are no spaces between words, but there IS often a space before and after a major cohesion marker. Use this to find your place when reading.

Smart Tips

Use 'ໃນທາງກົງກັນຂ້າມ' (on the contrary) instead of just 'ແຕ່' (but).

ຂ້ອຍມັກເມືອງ, ແຕ່ ລາວມັກປ່າ. ຂ້ອຍມັກເມືອງ. ໃນທາງກົງກັນຂ້າມ, ລາວພັດມັກປ່າ.

Always pair 'ເພາະວ່າ' with 'ຈຶ່ງ' or 'ເລີຍ' in the second clause.

ເພາະວ່າຂ້ອຍເມື່ອຍ, ຂ້ອຍນອນ. ເພາະວ່າຂ້ອຍເມື່ອຍ, ຂ້ອຍເລີຍນອນ.

Use 'ນອກຈາກນັ້ນ' to start your second and third points.

ຂ້ອຍມັກລາວ ແລະ ລາວໃຈດີ ແລະ ລາວເກັ່ງ. ຂ້ອຍມັກລາວ. ນອກຈາກນັ້ນ, ລາວຍັງເປັນຄົນໃຈດີ ແລະ ຮຽນເກັ່ງອີກດ້ວຍ.

Start your sentence with 'ເຖິງຢ່າງໃດກໍຕາມ...' (However...).

(Silence while thinking) ເຖິງຢ່າງໃດກໍຕາມ, ຂ້ອຍຄິດວ່າ...

النطق

tae (low tone)

Tones in Markers

Many markers have high or falling tones. For example, 'ແຕ່' (tae) is middle-low tone. If you mispronounce it, it might sound like 'ແທ້' (thae - real).

phro-wa (short 'wa')

The 'wa' in 'phro wa'

The 'wa' (ວ່າ) is often spoken very quickly and softly, almost disappearing in casual speech.

Contrastive Stress

ຂ້ອຍມັກອັນນີ້ ແຕ່ ບໍ່ມັກອັນນັ້ນ.

Stress the 'tae' to emphasize the contrast.

Memorize It

Mnemonic

Remember 'P-D-N': Phro (Because), Dang-nan (Therefore), Nok-chak-nan (Furthermore). The 'Power-Drive-Network' of Lao logic.

Visual Association

Imagine each cohesion marker as a different colored bridge connecting two islands (sentences). Some bridges are simple wooden planks (lae), while others are grand golden structures (theung yang dai kor tam).

Rhyme

Tae is for 'but', it turns the rut; Phro is for 'why', it gives the reply.

Story

Imagine a Lao student writing an essay. First (Tham-it), he has an idea. But (Tae), he forgets the word. Therefore (Dang-nan), he looks in the dictionary. Furthermore (Nok-chak-nan), he learns three new words!

Word Web

ແລະແຕ່ເພາະວ່າດັ່ງນັ້ນນອກຈາກນັ້ນເຖິງຢ່າງໃດກໍຕາມແລ້ວກໍຍ້ອນວ່າ

تحدٍّ

Write 5 sentences about your last holiday, but you MUST use a different cohesion marker to start every single sentence.

ملاحظات ثقافية

In Lao culture, being direct can sometimes be seen as rude. Cohesion markers like 'theung yang dai kor tam' (however) soften the blow of a disagreement.

In Luang Prabang, some markers might be pronounced with different tones, but the written form remains the same as in Vientiane.

Lao academic discourse relies heavily on Pali-derived markers to sound authoritative and educated.

Many formal Lao cohesion markers are derived from Pali and Sanskrit, reflecting the historical influence of Buddhism and Indian scholarship on the Lao language.

الأسئلة الشائعة (8)

Yes, but it's better to use `ແລ້ວກໍ` or start a new sentence with `ນອກຈາກນັ້ນ` in formal writing.

They both mean 'but', but `ແຕ່ທວ່າ` is more formal and often used in literature.

It almost always goes right after the subject: `ຂ້ອຍກໍ...` (I also...).

No, you can use `ຍ້ອນວ່າ` (nyon wa) or just `ເພາະ` (phro) in casual speech.

Use `ປະການທີໜຶ່ງ` (pakan thi neung) and `ປະການທີສອງ` (pakan thi song) for formal lists.

In traditional Lao, no. In modern, Western-influenced Lao, yes, it's becoming common.

Use `ນອກຈາກນັ້ນ` (furthermore) and `ເພາະສະນັ້ນ` (consequently) to sound professional.

`ເລີຍ` (loei) acts as a result marker, often paired with 'because'. It means 'so' or 'consequently'.

In Other Languages

English high

And, But, However, Therefore

Lao uses correlative pairs more frequently than English.

Thai high

และ, แต่, เพราะว่า

Lao uses 'nyon' more frequently for 'because' than Central Thai.

French moderate

Et, Mais, Cependant, Donc

French markers often require specific verb moods (like subjunctive), which Lao lacks.

German moderate

Und, Aber, Trotzdem, Deshalb

Lao word order is unaffected by cohesion markers.

Japanese low

Soshite, Shikashi, Dakara

Lao is head-initial (markers first), Japanese is head-final.

Chinese high

而且, 但是, 所以

Lao script is alphabetic, making markers easier to identify visually than in Chinese characters.
