Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Lao is a tonal language where the pitch of your voice changes the meaning of a word.
- Mid tone: A level, natural speaking pitch (e.g., 'ka').
- Low tone: A deep, falling pitch (e.g., 'kà').
- High tone: A rising, energetic pitch (e.g., 'ká').
Meanings
Lao uses six distinct pitch patterns (tones) to differentiate words that otherwise share the same consonant and vowel sounds.
Mid Tone
A flat, neutral pitch.
