المعنى
Asking how much something costs.
خلفية ثقافية
In Serbian culture, it is common to ask for the price directly. There is little taboo around discussing money in retail contexts. However, in social settings, asking a friend 'Koja je cena tvog sata?' (What is the price of your watch?) can be seen as slightly intrusive unless you are very close. Similar to Serbia, but you might hear 'Pošto?' more frequently in coastal markets. The tone is often very relaxed and conversational. In the Baščaršija (Sarajevo's old bazaar), asking 'Koja je cena?' is the start of a potential negotiation. Sellers are very friendly and might offer you tea while you discuss the 'cena'. Serbians living abroad often use 'Koja je cena' as a default when visiting home, as it is the most 'standard' and safe version of the question that works everywhere from Belgrade to Chicago.
The 'TS' sound
Make sure to pronounce the 'c' in 'cena' as 'ts'. If you say 'kena' or 'sena', people won't understand you.
Gender Agreement
Always use 'Koja' (feminine) because 'cena' is feminine. Using 'Koji' is a very common beginner mistake.
