The game 'Ainthu Kal' (Five Stones) is a traditional pastime for children, especially girls. It uses five small, smooth stones and develops hand-eye coordination. Ancient Tamil temples, like the Brihadisvara Temple, were built using massive stones, but the intricate details were often practiced on smaller stones first. In villages, small stones are sometimes placed under sacred trees (like Neem or Peepal) to represent local deities or protectors. Stones are often used in Tamil proverbs to signify permanence or obstacles. Even a 'small stone' can trip a great man if he is not careful.
