المعنى

To be absolutely clean or untainted, morally or physically.

The idiom '一尘不染' (yī chén bù rǎn) literally translates to 'not stained by a speck of dust.' Its origins can be traced back to Buddhist scriptures and philosophy, where 'dust' (尘, chén) is often used metaphorically to represent worldly defilements, worries, and attachments that hinder spiritual enlightenment. The concept of being 'dust-free' or 'untainted' is central to many Buddhist teachings, emphasizing purity of mind, body, and spirit. One significant early appearance of this concept is in the Lotus Sutra (妙法莲华经, Miàofǎ Liánhuá Jīng), a highly influential Mahayana Buddhist text, where it describes the pure and undefiled nature of buddhas and bodhisattvas. The idea is that true enlightenment leads to a state where one is not affected or contaminated by the impurities of the mundane world. Another relevant Buddhist text is the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch (六祖坛经, Liùzǔ Tánjīng), attributed to Huineng, an important figure in Chan (Zen) Buddhism. In this sutra, there is a famous stanza by Shenxiu: 身是菩提树, 心如明镜台。 时时勤拂拭, 勿使惹尘埃。 (The body is the Bodhi tree, The mind is like a bright mirror stand. Constantly wipe it diligently, Do not let it collect dust.) In response, Huineng offered his own stanza, which is often seen as a more radical and direct expression of the '一尘不染' concept: 菩提本无树, 明镜亦非台。 本来无一物, 何处惹尘埃。 (Bodhi originally has no tree, The bright mirror also has no stand. Originally there is nothing, Where can dust alight?) Huineng's verse suggests that the true nature of reality is inherently pure and empty, and therefore there is no 'dust' to accumulate in the first place, implying a state of inherent, not cultivated, purity. This philosophical idea deeply influenced the understanding of '一尘不染.' Over time, the idiom moved beyond its purely religious context and entered common Chinese parlance. While still retaining its spiritual connotations, it is now widely used to describe anything that is absolutely clean, spotless, immaculate, or morally upright and untainted by corruption or worldly temptations. It can refer to a physically pristine environment, a person of unblemished character, or even a pure and innocent mind. Its enduring popularity stems from its vivid imagery and its connection to deeply ingrained cultural values of purity and integrity.
