Use it right at the start of an interaction. If you see a colleague typing away, say it before asking your question. If you call a friend out of the blue, lead with this. Just don't say it with a smirk, or it might sound sarcastic!

Don't use it with your very best friends or siblings. They might think you're being weirdly distant or 'acting like a stranger.' If you're actually supposed to be bothering them (like a teacher to a student), skip it.

Chinese culture places a high value on 'Mianzi' or face. Asking this shows you are a 'person of quality' (you have suzhi). It proves you aren't selfish and recognize others have lives. In the past, social hierarchies were very strict. Today, this phrase levels the playing field. It’s a sign of modern urban politeness in busy cities like Shanghai or Beijing. It’s the mark of a considerate and well-mannered person.

If you want to be extra polite, try 不好意思，打扰了. This adds a 'sorry' at the beginning. If you are talking to an elder or a boss, use 打扰您了吗？ to show respect. In a text, people often just write 打扰了. If you want to be very casual, you might say 在忙吗？ (Are you busy?). Each variation shifts the vibe slightly but keeps the core respect intact.
