To call someone with 'the' in their title, you must insert 'ayyuha' (masculine) or 'ayyatuha' (feminine) between 'Ya' and the noun.

  • Use 'Ya' + noun for indefinite names (e.g., Ya rajul).
  • Use 'Ya' + ayyuha/ayyatuha + al-noun for definite nouns (e.g., Ya ayyuha al-rajul).
  • The noun following 'al-' must be in the nominative case (marfu').

Hast du schon mal versucht, die Aufmerksamkeit eines Kellners zu bekommen oder eine Gruppe auf Arabisch anzusprechen? Du kennst sicher das Wort yā (hey/O). Aber hier ist der Haken: yā hasst das Wort al- (der/die/das).
Sie sind wie Feuer und Wasser. Wenn du die Studenten oder den Arzt rufen willst und dabei den Artikel benutzt, kannst du nicht einfach yā al-... sagen. Das klingt falsch.
Stattdessen brauchen wir ein spezielles Brückenwort. Diese Regel bewahrt dich davor, gebrochen zu klingen, wenn du höflich oder formell sein willst.

How This Grammar Works

Im Arabischen steht yā normalerweise direkt vor einem Namen oder Nomen ohne al-. Zum Beispiel yā Aḥmad. Aber manchmal hat das Nomen schon ein al-, wie al-nās (die Leute).
Da yā das al- nicht berühren darf, fügen wir ein Hilfswort ein. Betrachte es als diplomatischen Puffer. Es ändert sich je nach Geschlecht, macht den Satz aber flüssig.

Du hörst das meistens in drei Situationen:
  • Formelle Anreden: Reden, die mit O Bürger beginnen.
  • Höfliche Bitten: Wenn man einen Fremden mit Titel anspricht, z.B. Entschuldigung, (der) Fahrer.
  • Feste Phrasen: Wie
    Meine Damen und Herren
    (ayyuhā al-sayyidāt wal-sāda).
Im Alltag lassen die Leute oft einfach das al- weg (yā mudarris statt yā ayyuhā al-mudarris), aber das hier zu wissen, lässt dich gebildet wirken.

Common Mistakes

Der größte Fehler ist der Zusammenstoß: yā al-rajul. Das klingt sehr schräg. Ein weiterer Fehler ist das falsche Geschlecht beim Brückenwort (ayyuhā für eine Frau). Und vergiss nicht das al- am Nomen zu lassen! Wenn du al- weglässt, brauchst du die Brücke nicht.

Meanings

The vocative particle 'Ya' is used to address someone directly. When the noun being addressed has the definite article 'al-', you cannot place 'Ya' directly before it; you must insert a connector.
