While お勘定 (okanjo) specifically refers to the bill or check at a restaurant, some people mistakenly use words like お金 (okane - money in general) or 支払い (shiharai - payment) when they should be asking for the bill. For example, saying 「お金ください」 (okane kudasai) literally means "Please give me money," which is obviously not what you want to say when you're ready to leave a restaurant. Similarly, 「支払いをお願いします」 (shiharai o onegaishimasu) is a bit too general for asking for the bill. Stick with お勘定 for clarity in this context.

§ Using it in inappropriate situations

お勘定 is primarily used in restaurants, cafes, and sometimes bars. It's not typically used for other types of purchases. For instance, if you're at a clothing store or a supermarket, you wouldn't ask for 「お勘定」. You'd go to theレジ (reji - cash register) and they would present you with the total. Using お勘定 outside of a dining establishment can sound strange or even rude. It implies you're settling a tab, which isn't the common practice in most retail environments in Japan.

§ Forgetting honorifics and politeness

While お勘定 itself is a polite term (the お is an honorific prefix), simply blurting out 「お勘定！」 can sound a bit abrupt. It's always best to preface it with a polite phrase like 「すみません」 (sumimasen - excuse me) or 「お願いします」 (onegaishimasu - please). This shows respect to the staff and is a fundamental part of Japanese communication etiquette. A common and natural way to ask for the bill is 「すみません、お勘定をお願いします。」
