The concept of 'wolna wola' is linked to the historical 'Liberum Veto', where a single nobleman could stop any legislation. This created a cultural legacy where individual will is seen as extremely powerful, sometimes even to the detriment of the state. As a predominantly Catholic country, the theological definition of 'wolna wola' (as a gift from God to choose between good and evil) is the primary way many Poles first encounter the term. After 1989, 'wolna wola' became a symbol of the transition to a market economy and democracy—the right to choose one's career, religion, and lifestyle after decades of state control. In the works of Witold Gombrowicz, 'wolna wola' is often mocked as an impossibility, as people are always 'shaped' by the presence of others (the 'Face' and the 'Ferdydurke' concept).
