A cold is rarely seen as just a virus; it is often linked to 'Bird' (cold air). People will strongly advise you not to drink cold water when you have a cold. When someone says they have a cold, the response 'ማርያም ይማርሽ' (May Mary heal you) is very common, showing the intersection of health and faith. During the rainy season (June-August), catching a cold is so common it's almost a social bonding topic. Everyone complains about the 'weather change.' The use of 'Feto' (cress seeds) or 'Kibe' (butter) in the nose is a traditional remedy for a cold that 'caught' someone severely.
