Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Renarrative Mood to report information you didn't personally witness, typically by using the '-л' participle and dropping the 3rd-person auxiliary.

  • Change the verb to its '-л' participle form (e.g., 'пише' becomes 'пишел').
  • Drop the auxiliary 'е' or 'са' in the 3rd person singular/plural.
  • Keep the auxiliary 'съм', 'си', 'сме', 'сте' for 1st and 2nd persons.
👤 + (съм/си/—) + Verb(-л participle) + 🗣️

Dropping the `е` is the grammatical signal that you are reporting hearsay. If you keep it, you are using the Present Perfect, which implies you are certain of the result or saw it yourself.

No. If you saw it, use the witnessed tenses (Aorist or Imperfect). Using the renarrative for witnessed events sounds like you have amnesia or are being sarcastic.

Yes, constantly! It's not just for books. Bulgarians use it every time they repeat a piece of news or gossip.

People will still understand you, but you will sound like a foreigner. It's like saying 'He said he is here' instead of 'He said he was here' in English—understandable but slightly 'off'.

Just put `не` before the participle: `Той не дошъл`. If there's an auxiliary (1st/2nd person), it's `Аз не съм дошъл`.

Yes, even the future and the past perfect have renarrative equivalents. The system is very symmetrical.

It is very similar in function to the Turkish `-miş` past, and many linguists believe the Bulgarian system was influenced by it during the Ottoman period.

Yes! This is called the 'Admirative' use. For example, `О, ти си бил тук!` (Oh, [it turns out] you were here!).
