Prefixation for Perfective Aspect
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Adding a prefix to an imperfective verb creates a perfective verb, signaling that an action is completed or bounded.
- Prefixes change the aspect: 'psát' (to write - ongoing) becomes 'napsat' (to write down - completed).
- Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe ongoing actions.
- Most prefixes also change the meaning slightly, like 'jíst' (to eat) vs 'dojíst' (to finish eating).
Meanings
Prefixation is the primary method in Czech for converting an imperfective verb (describing a process) into a perfective verb (describing a completed event).
Completion
The action is finished in its entirety.
“Přečetl jsem knihu.”

Resultative
Focusing on the result of the action.
“Dojedl jsem oběd.”
“Vypil jsem kávu.”
Directional/Spatial
Adding a spatial dimension to the verb.
