Prefixation for Perfective Aspect

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Adding a prefix to an imperfective verb creates a perfective verb, signaling that an action is completed or bounded.

  • Prefixes change the aspect: 'psát' (to write - ongoing) becomes 'napsat' (to write down - completed).
  • Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe ongoing actions.
  • Most prefixes also change the meaning slightly, like 'jíst' (to eat) vs 'dojíst' (to finish eating).
Prefix + Verb (Imperfective) = Verb (Perfective/Completed)
