Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To turn any statement into a Yes/No question in Lao, simply add the particle 'ບໍ່' (bor) to the end of the sentence.

  • Add 'ບໍ່' at the end of a statement: 'ເຈົ້າກິນເຂົ້າບໍ່' (Are you eating?)
  • Keep the word order identical to the statement: 'ລາວໄປຕະຫຼາດ' becomes 'ລາວໄປຕະຫຼາດບໍ່'
  • Use rising intonation at the end of the sentence to signal a question.
Sentence + ບໍ່ = Question?
